During the scheme 684 sports grants were awarded across Australia and the auditor-general found 73 per cent of the approved projects had not been recommended by Sport Australia, the independent body meant to oversee the program.

Need to call this out before it becomes the norm, the Minister needs to go and if any suggestions made by the PM and other Ministers they should punished.

Bring back the stocks!

Don't try and normalise this alleged corruption by claiming all governments do it.

The minister's direct approvals subverts normal approval channels through Sports Australia and is possibly unconstitutional.

The fact that many of the approvals are for marginal seats or seat lost in the last election only reinforces the allegation of corruption,

Best way to avoid the pork barrelling with grants is to be open about it. Simply set aside a proportion of grants specifically for that purpose. And since many of the applications are equally deserving, decide them by drawing lots.
How the grants could work is 20% blatant pork. For the rest, the public service selects the best applications or at least throws out the weakest cases, then the minister gets a blind pick of what's left and gets to make the announcement.

It's a very fair point, but so far the two sides have behaved very differently. Labor's minister resigned; the Nats minister who did the same thing is standing firm.

Scotty from marketing is going into full battle mode to try to convince the public that the battlers at Lilleepillee and Mosman needed those funds

Usual suspects will try to distract with "your side" point scoring, and even somehow make out with a scare campaign that since the greens would be worse for the status quo, this is all ok, carry on, life is good.

Both sides doing it is NOT OK!!! Maybe the greens would govern for the people? Or maybe they would trash the economy - i have no clue but this corrupt ** is NOT OK, it is NOT OK to ignore a merit based process in place for a reason with $100 million in funds, it was NOT OK to award $440 million in GBR funds without any due process at all, and it is not ok for the PM to stand behind this minister for political reasons and endorse it! sack her!! she must have some good ** on scomo, maybe even a nice record of him directing her on where the $$$ would go to

when will we realise we get the government we deserve, and finally shake up the red/blue system!!!

Fair go! We Australians need to get more into rowing. Haven't you ever wanted to launch your boat on the harbour and go rowing of an evening or on a weekend? No. Neither have I.

No, the Greens dont have any power over the finances

Yes the Libtards are just corrupt, and have a slimy group of wealthy donors and friends. The common people are treated like fools by the Liberal Party.

Pretty much. The libs govern for the rich. The wealth distribution in Australia grows ever more unequal. Mmmm.....I wonder if there is a correlation between the two?

It's shouldn't be, but it does provide another way to pork barrel marginal seats before elections....

I note the minister failed to disclose she was a member of a club that received funds after her approval....That's a conflict of interest at best and corruption at worst.

Well, arguably it's a good thing for the country if government funding is used to make it easier for people to get exercise, which makes them healthier and reduces health costs that would otherwise be paid by the community. The rest of society has increased the costs of running sporting groups in various ways, and grants can compensate for that.

We need to reject all political parties that want big high taxing governments.

Like the Greens and progressives.

If you want the opposite of the grant scams, support conservatives that want to do away with big hands-on weath-redistribution governments

The opposite of extreme left/right big governments is conservative liberation.

Get onboard

^ Agreed. So let's reject conservative governments because historically they're the highest taxing.

The Howard government was one of the highest taxing governments as a share of GDP in Australian history with 30.5% tax to GDP in 2000. Did you reject them too?

In fact in the last two decades, the lowest taxing government was the Rudd-Gillard government in 2010.

The Greens have never been nor will ever be in power, so it's easy to reject their ridiculous tax policies.

".....The tax-to-GDP ratio in Australia has decreased from 30.5% in 2000 to 28.5% in 2017...During that period the highest tax-to-GDP ratio in Australia was 30.5% in 2000, with the lowest being 25.3% in 2010."

TA is a bot for the right wing factions of the liberal party, just bagging the crap out of anything other than their own. Its a method of deflecting the blame onto others. Very popular technique with the right wing US and Australian politics.

Note that TA hasn't mentioned the scandal of liberal party bias pork barrelling

So the Liberal government has a minister who acts unethically (even corruptly), yet to avoid this happening we should reject the other parties?

Thats like an argument from a Year 7 inter school debate...

The inequity in Australia is sad. Wealth redistribution can occur through paying higher wages too, rather than screwing the poor worker for greater profits that benefit the rich and no one else. Wealth redistribution doesn't have to occur through higher taxes. Lib governments talk it up, but they only ever tighten the screws on wages and conditions - and that only benefits the rich.

Okay, maybe let people keep more of their money so they can use it to either work less or spend it on recreation activities they choose to participate in.

Most probably the vast majority of money spent by the Federal Government on sports goes to people at sports institutes. Why can't these people raise their own money to pursue their activity? Most people have to do this. Spending money at sports institutes would do bugger all in encouraging people to play sports or live active lifestyles.

Personally I could not care less if the Australian team came last in Olympic Games or world championships. I think it's a complete waste of taxpayers money to spend it on winning sports medals,
