Wing ding, wing wang, wing surfing.....somehow it has been associated with kite surfing and fallen into the kite surfing category. Does this new sport deserve it's own section on Seabreeze?

It's actually fallen into SUP foiling, which is pretty much where it belongs.

Hey guys,

This sport does actually deserve it's own category. SUP foiling is it's own thing, as is kite foiling. Wind Winging is growing bigger than I, or anyone else had imagined.

The take up has not necessarily come from kiters or SUP'ers. It fills a niche in between windsurfing, kiting, SUP'ing and foiling. This sport is about to become massive this season. Love it or hate it, it isn't going away and definitely needs it's own space as it evolves away from it's base.

Don't be scared, if it's not for you, you don't have to be frightened, it's not going to make you any less masculine by simply seeing it. Allow others who maybe haven't had a great intro to kiting to begin foiling and gliding above water with wind power.

It really is "all good"

I'll believe that when I see it. There are a few dirty little secrets that make it unlikely that wingdinging will be the "killer app" that it's being sold as.

Number one is it takes at the very least a huge SUP to get out on. The general public tried that in the early days of windsurfing and again with SUP. Huge boards suck.

It really needs a foil board to be good. More and more bucks and complexity. Even more technique involved to pump up onto the foil. Add in a half an hour of assembly, or a van to haul it all around in.

It takes possibly more wind than a planing windsurfer to get up and foiling. Slogging along in 10-15 knots is difficult, not that much fun, and usually requires a walk back up the beach carrying or dragging all your kit.

You can never just put down the wing and expect it to stay where you've left it. You have to tie it to something. See above.

Yes, wingdinging is awesome when you can do it, and you have all the gear, and the conditions to do it in. It might attract surfers interested in foiling. We'll see about that.

Pretty sure even the little locals are using wings that have the same projected area as my kite.

And it's right there in your face the whole time ... sure spoils the view.

My favorite thing to do -- wave enthusiastically at the wing foilers and watch them struggle with how to respond...

I wouldn't be surprised if wingdings take off. Electric skateboards are so huge now that I'm actually starting to feel like a dork on my normal skateboard.....should I buy leds for my front and rear trucks? Should I get a brown jumper with elbow pads, remote in one hand, skinny soy chai latte in the other? Chihuahua in my $1000 backpack?

Well, that's pretty much what it's all about...surfing with a foil.
If you've ever tried to surf a wave with a kitefoil, you've probably noticed that there will be always a moment where you had to execute a turn just to keep tensions in your lines. Even with the best drifting kites (Flysurfer Peak included), it just never felt right. At this point in time, Wingding is the only toll that seems to feel the gap.

All the time :D

Having to actively fly the kite is a bit of a hassle sometimes, but mostly it's not an issue because the wind and waves rarely line up to make it necessary.

In my observations, when the wind is so light that the kite is an issue, the wing foilers aren't able to get onto or use the swell at all ... the spend all their time pumping just to get onto it. There's no way they're letting go the wing with one hand to surf it.

Oh and that's the other thing: one-handed riding.

It has already here.

All the kite foilers bar ... me ... have gone to wing foils and the guys who only rode directionals have gone straight to wing foil.

So a day at the beach now is usually 80% wing foil, me on a kite and foil, and a guy or two on TT or directional.

How would this be possible???

5G has had a huge impact on frying people's brains making them think Windsurfing without a unijoint is superior.

Not sure if true but I hear sharks are attracted to foils, either because of the humming or movement up and down of the foil through water.

More of them in the lineup may make us surface riders safer?

I took up surf foiling 3 months ago and haven't ridden a short board since. just bought a wing and if it lets me surf big southerly swells I'll be selling 4x Reos....

Livit is onto it. I took up kite foiling to hit the excellent local foiling waves we have. Didn't take long to realise that even on my reos and neos I was always having to adjust for line tension and invariably out run the drift ability of the kite. Wanted to ride the waves like I can prone and sup foil and it wasn't working. So borrowed a cloud ... even then the limitations were obvious. Sure throw a peak in there but you are just minimising an inherent flaw - using the wrong equipement for a specific purpose.

had several sessions on the kite foil with Jason from WAnsurf and and a few others on wind wings...and when in the water, side by side it is very easy to see what you need to be on. Like some here I resisted it because I just can't be buggered learning something new again and would prefer to knock something I knew nothing about

so ... started another annoying journey of learning something new again ... with the accompanying lethal weapon "I'm getting too old for this sh1te". But second real session in and I'm at least on the foil for as long as I want. Just need to gybe now it's not that hard if you can foil... but god damn annoying at first. Weird ass bloody thing they are. They point like crap compared to a kite foil to.

if you want to foil waves in the wind and/or down wind swell riding, there's no comparison.

For flat water fun on a foil - use a kite.

Simple. best tool for use scenario.
E- foil ... if they get more affordable and battery technology improves (which it is exponentially) then I'd almost sell every toy I own!!! On shore - off shore wind, no wind ... swell/ no swell - it wouldn't matter. Job done.
One piece of equipment, no lines, no bladders, no harness ... oh the dream.

Shame the efoils are so heavy and expensive. If you come of on a wave and it mows you down, it will be one hell of a headache

So turn and carve harder

Maybe the conditions matter ... the angle the wind and swell makes at my local, you can ride the swell as long as you want and a decent drifting kite won't spoil your fun. And I think I'm getting used to unconsciously syncing the kite with gybes as needed...

I just can't get past the massive boards. The locals who used to marvel and scoff at my 170x50 door now all have 7-foot plus, 60L plus boards...!

Yeh I got pretty decent at riding waves ...even a long way offshore in outer reef breaks on a kite foil...but the limitations are obvious and in the end frustrating.

Yeh the massive boards are horrible beasts for sure - I'm learning on one - hate it. But eventually the good guys are getting down to 5'3 and smaller. Some guys even use their prone boards if good enough.

Remember I am not saying kite foiling is inferior to wind wanking. But if you are serious about riding waves as good as say on a prone foil or SUP in decent proper surf... it is highly inferior in every aspect. It honestly depends what you are after.

But If i am fanging about on the flat...or going on some upwind adventures...give me a kite foil anyday.

It's the same "purest" argument that was made against kite surfing, I seem to remember not ever having surfed a board without a kite, I guess I can't really comment. I'm happy with trade offs...
