Looks like the Strahan to Port Davey leg is off tomorrow! Swells building to 9m. Yikes.
Stay safe if you're out here - and come & say hi if you're hiding in Strahan.
Hi Bristol
Willyweather is predicting around 40 knots WNW from around 4am for all day long tomorrow in Strahan but the funny thing is Windy.com is only predicting about half of what Willy is so it will be interesting to see what Strahan actually gets
Regards Don
Hi Bristol
Looking at the observations from Strahan you are getting a far bit of breeze at the moment
We are getting just under 30's and it looks like you are getting just under 40's
Regards Don
Hi Don.
The Cape Sorell observations showed 36knts as the worst wind speed with 55knts as the worst gust. We are snug on the jetty right next to the town at Strahan.
It's interesting to have time to look at the various predictions, radar, maps as well as the barometer .
There are some fair seas building - a lot of red 8 - 11m combined sea and swell on the meteye chart!
Our trip to Port Davey may be delayed!
Cheers
Bristol
Hey Bristol
Looks like an extended stay in strahan will be the go !!!!!!
I can think of worse places for an extended stay!!
G'day, had gusts of around 45 kts at Maria over night,
A number of boats parked up at Raspins beach at Orford,
An unfortunate one stuck on the rocks near Deep Water jetty, around the corner,
Not as bad tonight l "think"
Oppsie...edit
Just checked forecast again
Same Same...
Cheers
MAST has put up a BOM screenshot for Maatsuyker Island,
83 kts.
'Exhilarating'.
I wonder what 83 knots would be like? (says he from the comfort of his armchair)
The worst I've sailed in was 60kn, and I freely admit I spent the first 24 hours scared to death.
Sounds like your going to have an awesome trip Bristol, look forward to hearing about it. I heard there were about 15 boats in Port Davey a week or so back, that lot came out in the last good weather window. Looking forward to sailing into there sometime myself, I just need the time... sigh!
I can't help thinking what it must be like for all the round the world race boats getting run down by these kinds of weather events in the Southern Ocean though? Must be terrifying!

I too wonder what it would be like,
briefly anyway...from the safety of the lounge recliner,
Most l've been steaming in ( we have ' stinkboats'... too much of a scaredy cat to step foot on a yacht ) was around 50 kt gusts and 4-5 mt swell out the back of Maria Island a couple of yrs ago,
Could barely see the island in the sleet, seemed we were heading to NZ a few times,
Fun is probably not the correct term,
I may or may not have wet myself,
Anywho...today is a different day,
Two masts is off the rocks ( yesterday )
The other cruising yachts have scarpered elsewhere,
Using their IRON sails...
NOT EVEN enough breeze to ruffle the few remaining strands of hair on me scone,
at least on the east coast,
Well, 3 weeks ago we jumped our own boat to crew Strahan to Kettering. Now back in Strahan to do it again - if we ever get the weather!
Port Davey was great 1st time.
We had 85knts wind whilst caretakers on Maatsuyker Island- brisk indeed.
Cheers

Well, well, Strahan to Port Davey was a scary, exhilarating blast - arrived at 3am in the pitch dark, anchored in Whalers Cove purely on the GPS, checking for rocks & the shore with the spotlight.
Bathurst Harbour was a dream. As the cruising guide says, the Ultima Thule of Tassie cruising.
Spain bay was a rough rolly night and the trip to south west cape a rough trip in the washing machine.
However South West cape to Recherche Bay was a superb square run all under sail. We got to Recherche in 12 hours dead, just anchoring in the last of the light.
What a superb cruising ground - in our little compass 28, a true lifetime experience.
We only have to get to Dover to complete the circumnavigation .
Hooray!
FINISHED
A lovely run up the channel completed our Tassie circumnavigation. I'd say that it's a "must do" for every Aussie sailor.
There are just so many high points; beautiful scenery, remote areas, great Anchorages, planning challenges and THE WEATHER. People are so helpful & the pilot guides are great.
The Tasman peninsula must be one of the world's great sails and the South West wilderness accessed from the Gordon River and Port Davey/Bathurst Harbour one of the few unspoilt, wild areas we can experience.
I feel very fortunate to have had the experience.
Cheers

Well done - it's definitely on my "bucket list"!!
I think I was having dinner at the Strahan pub whilst you were there, we did a motorcycle tour around tassie and spent the night on our way through....
Well done, you headed up to town staying in the Channel for a bit.
At Port Esperance over Easter.
Cheers

We were on the jetty right near the pub - lots of happy motorcyclists around. A top spot.

We'll be in Kettering for a couple of weeks. Anna has to fly to the UK for family reasons- I'm boat fixing / sitting! Probably will be on the attenuator .
