Ah geeez. I'm in deep and getting deeper.

Started w/ SUP Foil and became addicted immediately. A few months ago I transitioned to prone foiling and have been obsessed w/ that- absolutely loving it. Now a friend is trying to talk me into getting a wind wing.

The thing is local wind conditions are typically pretty light. I'm 90Ks and if I'm gonna use the thing with any regularity I need to be able to use it in marginal 10-15kts. I have Axis foil gear- currently own a 900 &1000. My SUP board is 6' x 28 115L. I'm looking at the new Naish S25- 6.0. Hoping I can learn with that and the 1000 wing. Is that a reasonable expectation in light wind? Hoping so as the new Naish wing will blow my budget and... I don't really want to spend on a 1020 and there don't seem to be 1010s available anywhere.

A bigger front foil makes more difference than a bigger wing. It is working in water which is way thicker than air. I use a 2400 front foil and a 5m Wasp and can get going in 10 to 15 knots easy. Put my 1550 foil on and it is really hard work. I am 105kg. I prefer a smaller wing when riding swells as they are way easier to control. Just my opinion, you will have to form your own with experience.

I have a couple of friends that for wingfoiling only use the 1000 (despite having several other wings) even with light wind.
Here's a session with Tiago (WASP 4M and Axis 1000):

IMO there is a big difference between the 102 and the 1000 foils using a wing.

They are the 2 foils I use and at 90kg I reckon you would struggle to get the 1000 going in 10 knots with a 6 metre Wing, at least for a while until you refine your technique, mind you I haven't tried the 6mtr Naish.

I just know that at 85kg and using a 5mtr Swing I usually use the 102 in anything less than 15knots and can get that going in probably around 10.
Even though I much prefer winging with the 1000, it's just too much hard work in marginal conditions and although the 102 is much slower it lifts up and stays up much easier.

We do have a fair bit of ribbon weed though so that influences my decision a bit, I find the 102 will keep going with a bit of weed but you notice it straight away with the 1000.

Tightlines is right, the 1020 is ideal. The 1000 will frustrate you in that light wind.

BTW, 4m is not light wind.

I'm now only using the axis 1000 for winging.
Just picked up the new naish 5.3m and 3.6m combo. Previous wing was the original 4m naish.

Given I have 9months of winging experience I am happy on the 5.3m on the 1000 in 10-12knots. The new naish wing in the 5.3m size has a heap of power once up and flying. It's just a matter of waiting for the right gust to get up go and then it is easy cruising. I used the 102 a lot when learning but is now not needed with the bigger 5.3m for me.

My weight = 87kg
baord = Sunova 6'4" - 110L.

Thanks much all... great feedback. I am hearing the new Naish is way more powerful than last gen and super rigid- pumps well. Hopefully this is enough. Guess since there is at least a chance it could work- I'll give it a go with what I have and go from there.

Hi Baldy123 exactly what I'm thinking of getting (5.3, 3.6 s25 Naish). I was thinking of just getting the 5.3 but am also considering selling the 4m and getting the 3.6. Do you have any sessions on the 3.6 yet, thoughts about it vs 4m? Sorry for the slight off topic questions.

Me: 85kg, 4m Naish wing, 6'6 BP SupFoil 116L, NP Glide L foil(1484cm).

The 900 & 100 are the the number one pick here for wingding . The 1020 is slow and blows out very quick but it is a good learning wing along with the 920 . The 100 on a 5m wing is all you'll need for lower winds around the 12knot range once you get some experience.

I think you'll be fine on the 1000 with a 6m wing.
If you can borrow a 1020 wing for a few sessions that would help. But you'll soon be wanting more speed and glide from the HA wings.

rmitch,

only 3 sessions on the 5.3m so far. Stoked with the upgrade. I have demoed the 3.6 briefly before I got mine this week. I'd say the 3.6 has as much power as the original 4m but in a more solid direct feel. Time will tell. I got the little 3.6 wing for downwinging. The 5.3m is a bit big to throw around riding bumps IMO, but it does sits neutral in one hand really good.

I did about 25km on it today. I am 105kg, so I need a little bit more wind to get up on it compared to my 102. But the 101 is a super fun carving machine and is lot more fun than the 102.

The 101 is great for winging.
Ive used it a few times on the 75cm mast with the 400 rear.
Highly recommend for light winds and bigger riders.
Very difficult to find in Oz at the moment.

Anyone using the Naish S25 5.3m and axis 101?
Looking to learn wingding for small onshore waves and maybe downwind (or to go back upwind after downwind paddle run)
What's the top end of wind speed with this setup (for an average / new rider?)
Sounds like the low end would be around 10-12 knots
Does it work in small surf and windchop?
Any other feedback for new learner?

I am 105kg and I cannot get up on a 5m wing on a 101 (1400cm2) in 10/12 knots. I would probably be okay on a 102 (2000cm2) in 12 knots on a 5m wing.

I would need about 15 knots to starr. Once I am up on the 101, I can stay up in 10 to 12 knots.

The top end speed for me is about 14 knots on flat water.

I'm in Maui and it is blowing 20 + often... there was 30+ People out today at "the harbor" half of them were beginners, including me. Winging is really "taking off" here...This place is perfect for learning, flat water and a jetty provide for lighter wind close to shore , but cranking in the channel... I have only an Axis 900, but I was thinking the 820 for learning for maybe more slow, steady stable ride - I have a 4m Duotone... Or maybe a 3m wing with a 920?? What size foil would be best for learning? The armstrong rep wants to get me on a 1600...

Hey Hilly, do you think the 2400 is ok for wave riding with the wing or is it too big for that.

Here, lighter riders favor the 920 and 900 wing combo for winging. Heavier guys favor the 1020 and 1000 combo.

This setup covers all wind. The slower, easier, 920 and 1020 are perfect for learning, then later as your light wind setup.

It is ok with a small tail and +1 shim up to chest high. Gets a bit sketchy after that. I have done bigger, but soft rolling swells rather than steep walls. It gets you out in feck all wind though, which is why I use it. Best feeling cruising around in 12 knots gliding into swells. So quiet.

I in exactly same situation, you will need 1020 for early lift. The axis high aspect 900 and 1000 need so much speed to get up, great once up but I too at 95kg need at least 18knt to get up on 6m Naish. Once I get the hang of it I know I can get out in lighter but when learning you need more wind to learn positions of wing and board to get most out of wind. I have over 20 years kiting experience and that doesn't even help, it is hard to learn unfortunately but it's fun and worth it.

Depends on your weight but 910 would need 20knots min to get going as has less lift than 900 and 1000

Interesting that it has less lift despite being part of the glide series!

Just curious what front wing, tail wing, fuselage combos are you using for different wind/surf conditions when winging(include your weight)??

I've been playing around with different front wings with the short fuse and 390 stab. Have a bunch of other stabs to start experimenting with, as well as ultra short fuse, and I'm curious what you use for what conditions. There's so many combos it's a lil daunting trying to figure out what to try next...

I'm about 75kgs, short fuse, 390 stab
Light winds either the 920 or 1000 (or my neighbors 1010 if I can snag it)
Strong winds 900
Strong winds with waves/swell 760

78kg. Short fuse. 920/400 light wind. 1000HA/390 strong wind.
