It is the most intense work out I've done in a long time. I came in second on the sup foil portion. I highly recommend this format for contest. Also a distance run of you get one wave and you can keep catching waves and pumping till you come off foil and we're talking about a race of doing a mile down the coast and back only by wave.
The format was set up with thoughts that we would have a strong North wind (side shore) so foil down and run back but, it was perfect light on shore winds so no limit to go both directions along the beach. Running through the kids and drunk spring breakers was a good challenge also.

EricFoil from instagram. Not the Erik who runs the podcast. That Erik, did not show up, even though he lives 2 hours north of the contest. Ericfoil flew in from Texas.

For the sup section results
Austin Kalama 1st
Nick O'Bea 2nd
Damion Leroy 3rd
Alex Aguera 4th

Austin is on a different level, and amazing to watch in person. I would be finishing the first foil run and just getting to the beach to run back up and Austin would be foiling back up on his second lap not having to run up. For the other 3 of us it was a game of shoots and ladders. Luck and skill. I highly recommend getting some friends together and doing this foil down and run back up. I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. Kalama did several races that day, amazing athlete. Damion will be a a challenge in the future for sure. He came with a big surf wing, sup with no handle and an ankle leash. Once he gets on a high aspect foil, gets the pump rhythm and a proper board and leash set up, he'll be killing it.

Austin is a freak. I was over on Maui for the team rider "fly with us" weekend. Here I am just cruising on a couple of waves and Austin's doing 360s, back flips and all kinds of unthinkable moves.. foiling is next level for sure.

I checked the rules but I'm sure to understand exactly how it was working.

On the video we don't see the all thing.

It was not clear at all.

My guess is that you had to do loops between two imaginary lines:
- one joining the white triangular buoy on the left and (i guess) a flag on the beach at its level
- one joining the orange cylindrical buoy on the right, and a white and blue flag on the beach, the one the camera shows at 0:47

Having this amidst bathers and kids potentially hidden by chop seems quite irresponsible, however.

Whilst it's all a bit hard to follow on that clip (can't believe it wasn't covered better), these are very early days of a concept that could have some merit once it's ironed out.

Personally I would have liked to see the running up the beach part removed. Start the event from the out side buoy (i.e. start with catching a wave) outside the box. Maybe pick a better location with deeper channels but much better waves.

I like it, look forward to seeing where this leads.

Colas, agree. seemed to be a few too many people in the way.

Ride safe,

JB

A little background on how the contest came to be. Every year there is a big surf festival on that date. Just 2-3 weeks prior to that date, RedBull offered up some money to the local kite/foiling shop to have a foil event. Bam! Calls went out to all the locals, to do test runs and figure out how to do this contest on such short notice.

It came together so fast....

They have lots of ideas to improve it for next year.

Thanks DWF, Great to hear they got it all together in such a short time. Like all first events, there's some wrinkles to be ironed out, but as said above, think there's some good merit in the concept. Look forward to seeing round 2.

ride safe,

JB
