Coils in bigger waves are crap. They tie themselves into a knot. Some people use corks to keep the leash above water. Kalama and crew tuck them in their shorts, no use if you wear a wetsuit.
I am about to get a DaKine hollow floating strap. Will see how it goes.

Da Kine coil ... at first great, then after a half dozen bigger wave sessions, the coils uncoil and it's 6' long dragging behind you, lots of resistance in the water.

I am experimenting with the kite reel leash option (Oceanus), tied to a waist band. Nice to have nothing in the water, but jury is still out if it's better/ideal. Super nerdy look is a bonus, like I need more of that.

For just general foiling this is all I use www.oneoceansportsaustralia.com/accessories/no-logo-waist-leash

Yes if you take them in to solid surf they can stretch but the waste belt side is so much better

My problem was not stretching, which they do, it was the tangled mess that made the leash about 6 inches long which is not nice with a decent sized set bearing down. Other times the mess wraps around my foot which is worse. Having the board strapped to my back would be exciting, not
In small waves both options would be fine, I only have issues in bigger waves.

I'm with Hilly. That's why I went back to straight leash but with a cork to keep it from tangling around foil. Yes I can feel a bit of drag but doesn't bother me when surfing. More focused on what's in front of me. Plus I only notice it more when paddling back out to the break. Never used a waist leash. But maybe the waist leash with reel may be the go. Especially on long Down wind runs. But I like to keep it simple.

Waist + coil is ideal, the drawbacks of coiled leashes only exist if you tie them to the leg:
- they are underwater after wipeouts and may tangle in the foil
- the back and forth movement of the leg is what makes them tangle (suddenly shortening them): they do not tangle with a waist leash.

Plus they are totally out of the way when walking, incredibly useful when getting in and out the water, to be able to forget the leash and focus on the rest of the gear.

I do not use a waist leash normally, as I like to be able to pull on the leash to get back the board to me quickly. But with a foil they are a game changer.

I have one of paul.j waist leash and I like it on the 14ft board but not in the sup surf or foil as I fall a lot but maybe when I get to paul.j foil level I'll be ok
I swap leash between knee coil leash and ankle straight leash when foiling.

Hi,
Tried everything and found a leashlok waist belt, 9' straight leash with a closed cell foam block 3' from the waist end. That way it doesn't drag in the water. Works great.

Easy for me as i shorten the legs of older steamers into spring
A strip/band/loop of the cut off wettie is worn above my knee and While kneeling before I stand i tuck the leash up through the band a loop hangs out and no worries mate
