Yeah that makes sense because when we tow with it we use no shims , they have a 750 coming out as well .

OK sorry to do this to everyone who is out there shimming the mast to 7mm on the Kujira 980 . I rode it today in clean shoulder high waves at Kirra with alot of wave energy . First wave was such a handful I was all over the shop , so different to the 1ft mush I did all the testing in. It was still a 500m ride but it wasn't pretty , just so much lift and when I rolled off the back to link the one behind I was skating on the surface , an incredible amount of carry and almost didn't need to pump but I was in survival mode riding at almost full mast the whole wave. I went in and changed the shim to the Takuma production rubber shim ( apx 2mm to 3mm I'm guessing 1-degree angle) and bumped the mast back . So much better but still found I was getting too much lift from the Takuma 210 tail when I was going top to bottom on the wave you could feel the tail break the surface.

Came in again and put on my cut down 13.5" flat Uni tail which I use on my 1300 LOL and boom I was away it felt unreal so much more control and lost no pump. So for me this is the combo . I'm still settling into the 980 and blown away by the way this small wing carries my 88kg. Not saying yet it's the best wing I've ridden but for it's size it's pretty damn amazing. Uni , Signature tails screw straight onto the Takuma and I'm going to order a Kane de Wilde custom 13.5". I'm not going to attempt to chop shop the Takuma 210 tail just too much going with the lumps and bumps plus the tips I would wreck it , I'll keep it as is for smaller days. Great swell all weekend so plenty more testing to come.

So now I'm confused, at 70kg on a 4'3, the 980 might feel too lifty then ??

Hopfully I will be able to try both Kujira 980 and Unifoil 150.

Also I orded a Kane 13.5 stab, can't wait to get it.

I hear you , the 750 is on its way , I seriously doubt I'll ever use the 1210 on the prone again just too much lift and yes I think the 980 might be too much for your size . I'm 88 kg , I am ordering a Kane 13.5" as well a mate had one on his Uni today out in the surf , it's a work of art . Also had another epic surf today on the 980 . 35.9 kph max speed . 6 waves over 500m , longest 746m didn't fall once triple and quadruple effortless wave connections . Starting to really love this foil.

What about the flex ?

I checked the carbon mast/fus and it looks super flex, way flexier than my Signature 165.

Interesting, maybe the mast you compared to your Sig mast was an old model Takuma?

I just put mine together & I think it's as stiff or stiffer than the 72cm Armstrong I had previously.

Hope you guys had an epic Xmas.

Can anyone advise in the 1600LOL foil set what are the 4 tapered steel washers seen below for?I figure they are only vaguely fitting the mast base plate bolt holes but a)can't see the point for that? b) they came with the wing not mast??!

Also in the mast bolt set below......should there be included shims for the stab? I have seen them in the set sold separately by Tacuma but maybe not for the 1600Lol or 980 sets (not required)??

Any info massively appreciated.

Did notice the wings will be 5cm more forward relative to the mast compared to Naish Jet so assuming I will need to slide the base plate to the back of the board rather than my usual middle setting to compensate.

Frothing to get in the water now thanks for all the info (and motivation thus far).

Cheers

Dave

Those tapered washers are for the carbon mast plate and yes you should have got a red shim but you don't need it with the 1600 so maybe they take it out .

The 1.5 mm shim really helped tame my 1600 in the surf. If you are using it for winging it might not matter.

If you want to get widest speed range out of your 1600 I'd recommend sticking a washer under the rear stabiliser bolt (unless your front foot has lead in it).
I'm also running 320mm span chopped tail which I really like.

The 980 has way more lift than say for example the Alby 165, it's a totally different feel - very front footed. I'm 73kg & won't need anything bigger than the 980, first impressions of this foil are it's going to be great.

With the wedge that was supplied with the kit (approx 4mm), also had the +1mm shim in the stab & foil in the middle of the boxes.
Felt pretty good for my 1st try but will keep experimenting to look for the sweet spot with +/- shims / different stabs.

Interesting, you seems to have tried many different foils so it is good to hear from you.

Used my 980 again (2nd sesh) this morning, still setup with the wedge for the mast that was supplied with the kit & +1shim. Pretty stoked that it performs really well straight out of the box.

Imho all the hype about the 980 is real

Thanks v much guys

Had first session prone on the 980- blew me away how good it is. Was expecting to waste a few sessions dialling it in but it was flying so much better than my current foils straight off.

2-3' of fat backing off rivermouth reforms and i was loving the speed and ease of turning considering I am fairly novice. Found the speed actually makes things easier than the low aspect draggy slow foils that give huge lift (too much).

Local dealer was saying how good these foils are, thanks to him and Piros feedback here I bought in and am stoked I did(85kg rider)!

Hard to believe they need a longer fuselage. Maybe its meant for their efoils? Is there pictures somewhere?

It is not a longer than their previous fus, I noticed it is longer than other brand : for example it is (fus +wing) = 72.5cm for Kujira 980 when it is 68 cm for Signature albatros 165.

Yes the fuse is slightly longer but it still turns really well. I think this could be because the mast is mounted further back from the front wing than other foils.

Is anyone using them on the wing? What sort of top speeds are you guys hitting.

That would explain the front foot pressure, remember the Slingshot switch fuse with A,B and C options for mounting the mast on the fuse .'A' position was very little front foot pressure which I liked, 'B' used to buck me off unless the waves were small but some guys loved it for pumping and turning.C was really only for windsurfers.Interested to hear from Kujira riders if they experience difficulty in taking steeper drops or riding bigger waves ?

These are some pics of my 1600 setup. I did it originally for the 1300, but found it works really well with this foil as well. The last pic shows the shim washer. I'll get round to making a proper shim one day.

That was a nice run Mick , you looked really good on the foil. I'm back to work today , surfed the Kujira 980 every day over my break . I've now had it in 1 foot to 6 foot just so comfortable on it. Glad to have a day off finally

Noticed it popped up pretty quick on the takeoff, is that all part of the front foot nature of it ? Or is it just me looking for things wrong with it cause I don't have one.haha
