The Handle thing is an interesting view point. I really like having multiple options for my grip. After quite a few goes now on the wing and getting consistent glides on the foil and riding from super light to heavy winds, I use different handles for the following,

Front hand/arm,
Forward handle - Good for baring away and floating the wing more / running a more over head angle with ease.
Next handle back - Most all-round handle. This balances well with the back hand on the 3rd last handle. It does make the rear hand a little more positive (more powerful back hand feel) and generally where I like to be when nicely powered and reaching.
3rd Handle back - Power position. This tends to put the wing into a more vertical plane. This is good for punching upwind and staying more sheeted on as the straight front arm takes a lot of the load and the back hand just trims.

Back Hand/Arm,
3rd handle from the back - I use this one 90% of the time. It seems to be a good sheeting angle with and compliments the above positions well.
2nd handle from the back - This is only used sometimes, mainly if it is super gusty, I combine this one with the 2nd from he front and have a wide grip. It makes controlling the wing easier while getting flogged by a gnarly gust.
4th handle from the back - I use this sometime s along with the 2nd from the front or absolute front handle when going down wind or when super powered up across or off the wind.
5th Handle forward. I use this for sailing with one arm. The wing balances here relatively well in light air. Helps to get the wing out and clear easily.

So all up, I am using a lot of the options in a variety of different conditions. I can imagine on a long DW'er having the option to get the balance point close to if not perfect a really big thing, as when it neutral it's weightless. and going 10+km would be a dream.

I think some of the battened (non Luff-Strut) wings out there will have trouble covering the same wind range and trim range as the Wing-Surfer. But I am bias

More coming,

regards,

JB

Good info.
I was also thinking 1.98m tall skinny guy may like different handles than a short stocky guy..

Nice to read your insight, bias or not.

Do you think you could submarine start a very small prone board. (Like behind a boat) Or not enough pull?

This is how Bernd Roediger starts on his 24ltr "Foil Board". He totally submerges it underneath him then flies the wing above his head to generate up-pull, slowly adjusting the angle as he gets more out of the water until he eventually is on top of the water, then inevitably foiling. He is one talented guy, and I am not sure if I will be able to do this, but I will try

I am sure we are about to see lots of crazy stuff in the coming months as the wings arrive.

Ride safe,

JB

Here is a raw clip from Sunday's session (when the wind never actually came in - again ). But it is kind of cool to see the speeds I needed to get up on the foil, then the cruising speeds. The wind is very light, I catch the edge of a tiny gust, maybe 10kn or so, but end up riding into some very light air.

Excuse the breathing (working harder than usual in the super light air) and the poor GoPro angle (I had my view on wide and not Superview).

Enjoy,

Ride safe,

JB

Nice video JB. Good to see it can cruise in light wind. Looks like a minimum cruise speed of about 15 kph is enough to keep the foil up & running. I am guessing you are using the Naish XL wing? Thanks for this post. It helps.

Great video JB...my question ..Is the foil board I ride and foil on going to be suitable for the wing..or is there a specific size that suits this better..I ride a 6'6 x 103L and I'm 95kg.

Hey Seajuice,
Yes looks like I can pop up at about 10km/h, then hold foiling at 12km/h with some pumping, but yes stable pumpless flight is about 15km/h.

This was on the XXL wing. It is a bit of a double edged sword as the greater lift is quickly counter acted with the drag and low speed. I nearly think the XL is a better choice as it's very lifty and faster.

I will put up a few more glides with the speed soon for further analysis.

A lot of fun even in the super light stuff.

Ride safe.

Basically all the same aspects of foiling work for Wing Surfing too. You want to be one the smallest board you can manage, but you also need to be able to start off and ride when not on the foil. So pretty much the same board you already foil in will be perfect.

Duotone guys are doing their homework too:

Nice video sequences of feathering the wing technique (depower) riding the waves. Such that, ideas come on using it for downwinders (following broad reaches lines or something)

Cheers,

Marc

These work well for down wind and come in different sizes .
Maybe with good body technique could work up wind

They do not make kite wings. I guess producing wingfoils requires expertise in kitesails making.

I believe Airush is the kite arm of Starboard.

PS Had a go at kiting with the SUP foil today. Initially very difficult balancing on a stationary SUP and managing a kite in light wind. Once I worked out the starting sequence and got moving it was massively stupid grin inducing.

To boom or to boom that is the question. I also like the slingshot and the signature wing.

Here a Quik edit done by the GoPro software. Not too sure how to make it work well, but covers a bit from yesterday's session on the Wing-Surfer.

Here is my first session.

Then this was racing the Saturday Yacht race. Good fun considering how light it was. Reckon I could beat them with more wind.

Just the upwind.

Just the Downwind.

Best bareaway.

Enjoy,

ride safe,

JB

I have been always impressed by the seagull planning up in the air along the lines of swell by offshore days. May be the dream to follow the sea gulls up the wave lips come true

Yep. That's how I'll go if I get to stand up. Haaa! It looks quite slow & cumbersome in that wind. Wondering if the Naish or Slingshot would go better. Or is it just technique & obviously slower without the foil.

Not yet, this was only session 8. Hard to get good wind in Sydney. Maybe tomorrow if it backs off from 50kn without going dead calm.

OK - so I have had 3 sessions so far on the duo tone 4m.

Session 1 flew straight away - stacked the gybe. Spent ages getting up the wrong way . ( switch) but once up flew back to the launch.
After that I kinda lost it - and did the walk of shame a few times before retiring exhausted.

Session 2 Many walks of shame as there was a huge swell and I only had an xl naish wing with me as the forecast was for 20knts plus - then eh wind went ballistic - and I finally made it back to the launch ( just to shut up my jeering kitesurf buddies!) 5 hours in the water - mostly bobbing in light winds

Session 3 gusty nasty hitting maybe 30knts at times sometimes 10 - heavy swell again.
This time it all came together - sailed straight out gybed - was miles upwind - rode the swell back in - depowering at will whenever I needed to. The swell was running the wrong way - so I was doing a lot of switch riding - which is a bit like medicine that tastes bad but is good for you.

In the lulls - I was dredging the old grey matter for windsurf strategies - how to get planing using a swell. This had to be timed with leg pumping ( switch - totally alien) and arm pumping ( aka windsurf style) ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!
but once nailed had it coming up more efficiently.

So far loving it - the freedom on the swells is lovely - pumping the legs at times to stay up - sometimes sheet the wing in and keep going that way to link to the next swell line.
So far it wont go waaaaaay upwind like I can on a kite - I am sure there is performance to come once I figure out which way to angle the wing in order to pinch upwind. When it's howling - there is a tendency to luff up accidentally - less so if you have the wing more above your head - but that does slow you down..
Really looking forward to the next session - put it this way - I am off to Bali - no kites - just a wing and a paddle and a 5'9 SUP with a Couple of foil wings.

Yeah this was on naish xl foil - not tried a xxl wing yet as the 2019 naish mast wont fit the gong fuselage and I have given up on gong masts.
