Ok, expecting this thread to disappear relatively fast, but maybe not!

I love Wing-Surf'ing fast, and am always tweaking and working on averages, peaks and technique. So I thought maybe a Wing Foiling GPS Speed leaderboard could be fun to see what if fast and where people are at. Also great to share best practice, ask questions and better share what's working.

I have been pushing my top ends speeds a lot recently and yesterday hit some excellent speeds with great averages. But, was it actually fast?

Gear: Naish Hover 110CU with JET 1240HA/310HA/75 & S25 Wing-Surfer 6m.

Conditions: BOM observations for Terrey Hills Ranged from Average of 4kn to Gusts of 15kn. My guess would have been similar, I was drifting at times for 20 minutes+, but also lit on the 6m when it turned on. Wind from the WSW - W then back WSW before kicking at SW.

Rider: 189cm, 90kg.

Location: Narrabeen Lakes.

Peak Speed: 39.4kmh (21.3kn).

Best 2 sec: 39.2kmh (21.2kn).

Best 5 sec: 39.0kmh (21.1kn).

Best 10 sec: 38.6kmh (20.8kn).

Best 20 Sec: 37.8kmh (20.4kn).

Best 500m: 30.1kmh (16.3kn).

Best 1km: 28.4kmh (15.3kn).

Best 1NM: 26.0kmh (14.0kn).

Distance Travelled: 44.05km.

Time: 3:03:10.

GPS Summary.

Here is the link to a google self input leaderboard. Let's see what you've got. - docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1naahHFFU-ux3OQM_4QUQ2dvakB3VJYfWnsijCmKIK-k/edit?usp=sharing

Very impressing! You're closing in on the windfoilers, maybe time for a new sub-discipline at www.gps-foilsurfing.com/?

Maybe we need a separate WingSurfing/FoilWinging section on Seabreeze?

Smoking. To you have any other stats showing averages? I cracked the 40kmh barrier Surfing on the Foil, but on the wing, is is much harder.

Nice work.

Yes maybe what's everyones thoughts , me personally I think traffic gets pretty low at times on the breeze and the more you break it up some sub sections might not get looked at. I have just visited the Sup General section for the first time in about 6 months since foiling was separated and there was a couple of interesting topics in there. Unless you see a thread roll under your nose you are less likely to contribute. Just my thoughts I'm easy either way.

I think it has merit. I'm a windsurfer, now windfoiling as well. 6m Wing on the way. I was looking for discussion and review of wings and found it hiding in the SUP forum, which I would otherwise never frequent. Some websites allow you to save sub forums or threads to a favourites list. That would help here.
on speed, I'll be tempted to try my wing on flat water with a conventional windsurfer board. 30+ should be achievable under that scenario, but of course that's not foiling...

+1

Suggestion: always put the "Wing" word in the title of all the posts speaking of wing here. Ideally start them with "[Wing]".
You should have the best of both worlds.

I don't know if some volunteers could be empowered by the admin(s) to act as curators in this forum and systematically prepend [Wing] to the title if not here on topics about wings.

I don't normally try for max speeds as I usually just use the wing to get upwind to surf downwind. The waves in the river weren't really forming up today so I thought I'd give the speed thing a go. Don't have the technology for different splits like JB, just max. Room for improvement still. Wasted a couple of gusts by starting to lose control and having to bail.
Wind gusting to around 17kts according to seabreeze, water quite lumpy.

I'm around 85kg. Swap back and forth between the 1600 and 1300. Haven't really settled on a favourite.

Have to get back out on the wing to keep up with you lot!

Whilst it isn't apples with apples highest speed thus far is 39.4 surfing. Was absolutely flying... Go Foil 140 with high aspect Maliko tail.

I recon they would be great to race. They react so fast to the wind shifts and up wind you can even pump straight up for a bit. Unfortunately I'm stuck twisted on my would be goofie side which sucks

Kobo what did you record that on , can you break up individual waves . 45kph seems too high so does 87 strokes in a minute & 16.14m per stroke .

Recorded on a garmin Fenix 5 watch with the surf tracker 2 app. It records individual waves , lefts or rights but it also records the paddle or walk back out which makes the average speeds etc low.I don't know how accurate it is ,sometimes it records really high speed spikes but I think that might be when I crash.I ignore the spikes in the graph and mostly the max speeds are in the mid 30s , but interestingly I consistently get the highest speeds prone surfing not kite foiling with the surf wings.Ive tried to go as fast as possible with the kite but can't seem to match the prone foil top speeds.I think maybe the kite is pulling up as well as along so it's harder to hold the wing down while kiting?

just from a out sider looking in ,do you think they will develop a wing that is just made for speed foil winging .

eg ,smaller inflatable luff ,and maybe a batten for a more rigid ,wing ..

i guess its a fairly new sport ,and it may look different in a few years ...i'm sure there's someone working on it now .

I had the Fenix 5 got rid of it , terribly inaccurate in the surf. The reason you get higher speeds prone is because your arms are flapping around and it reads that , your arms stay nice and steady on the kite bar making it more accurate plus you can't run IOS apps on Garmin and their Surf tracker version is very average at best.

Yeah the fenix (or garmin in general) is definitely not the most accurate out there. When paddling a ski or sup in a steady tempo, the recorded speed jumps around a fair bit.
Looks like locosys is the one to go to for accurate speeds.

Yep, I second the Locosys GW60 watch. Doppler based . Used by kite and windsurf speed sailors, very accurate. Upload to Sportstracklive online site for analysis .

The fenix seems reliable for speed when set to the kite app , but it only records max speed then and not individual waves, the length of each wave ridden seems ok on the surf tracker app.

Great session yesterday in a super gusty westerly. Cracked a 41.3kmh max run with some serious averages.

39.8kmh for 10 sec is pretty fast. Looking forward to hunting down 45kmh now.

Keen to see some more entries if anyone else is going speed.

JB

Is ther more development perhaps where a wing and a conventional rig merge closer or is that losing the whole point of the slingwing ?

JB Those speeds seems to be getting fast for a surf foil , I always assumed that I would get my fastest speed while kiting, but I have recorded mine while proning , I put this down to the kite lifting me up and off the foil and not being able to keep as much weight forward to hold the foil down.Do you think it it easier to go faster with a wingding because the power is helping to hold you down and not lifting you at the same time ?

Not sure, but possibly. I hold my wing really vertical (sometimes with the wingtip glancing the water) and stretched out in front. I also think because you're directly connected to the wing you can do quicker finer tuning for the apparent as you bareaway. I honestly think I could have gone quicker yesterday if the gust lasted longer. it is all in the setup and bareaway. And it's not always the windiest day you go the fastest.

Watch this space, I am anticipating some crazy speeds in times to come.

Please share your experiences.

JB

For sure faster gear is coming. I kinda like the inflatable approach though. When you have stacks like this at 38km/h they really hurt (bloody sore today), this was totally in control, baring away and accelerating rapidly when I mis-judged my height mixed with a gust a blew a wingtip at high speed = big impact!

I have the video, might try do a slow mo if it looks cool.
