I am riding a 8'7' SG right now. Love it but frankly in most of my days on SS Oahu it is less than shoulder hight and SG seems to need more juice.
Looking at the Supertech. I'm 70kg. How to choose between the 7'11 and the 8'3?

Hi Toolate, at 70kg you should be fine on the 7'10 depending on your experience & ability & then you have the SG for bigger days.... I'm 80kg & use to ride the 7'10 ST as my comp performance board but if i wasn't riding it all the time it was a struggle in the choppy conditions but great if glassy... I then rode the 8'3 ST for a while & it was definitely more comfortable on the bumpy days.. I use the 8'7 SG as my "step-up" board for the bigger days so they make a good quiver of boards.... I'm now riding the NEW 7'7 Destroyer though which allows me to go short without losing stability...
Hope this helps..

I never tried the Supertech, but frankly I would advise a short compact shape rather than these pulled in shapes for small weak waves.

In the JL Line that would be the new Destroyer or maybe the Super Frank or the Kwad.

And of course any mini-Simmons / mini longboard / fish SUP shapes in other brands.

Shoots one more choice! But likely something like that fun shape of the destroyer would indeed work better for my south shore mush.

Yeah, a Destroyer shape much better if your waves are lacking. But on Oahu.....surely you have some punch in the swell? Good call Colas.....

South shore mostly only has punch when your Southern Hemisphere storms kick up in our summer. Or the occasional west wrap from large North west swells.

Having surfed the South Shore quite a bit the 7'7 Destroyer will do everything you want....Just fin it as a proper thruster or a quad & it'll go good in most conditions

Having owned both boards the 8'3" supertech is a much better board than the 8'7" stungun in gutless waves, but the stungun is awesome in a bit of juice

I picked up an 8'3 super tech today, really nice shape. Can't get over how light it was! 6.2kg with quad fins! Massive shout out to Rob and jimmy for super quick responses on how to get a couple of dings fixed from
the pervious owner.
Cant wait to try it in any kind of waves but flat water paddling seemed really stable

so you might consider it after all despite comments on it NOT being a good shape for gutless waves?

too late I am on oahu too and have a 7'10 flight board if you ever wanna meet up, you can give it a try and see what you think of that length of board before you buy one.

I've had a couple of sessions on my 8'3 supertech now and can say first hand it can definitely handle lumpy small on-shore as well as hollow overhead waves. Had to paddle out through this today and I can't get over how stable the supertech is for it's size and volume, makes light work of big whitewash.
probably the closest to a 1-board quiver I've found so far.

i took delivery of a 7'10 ST and got out today. Small surf with pretty clean conditons and mod offshores...
certainly requires MUCh better technique than my 8'7 SG but on the waves really lively and FUN.
Excited to see how it goes in bigger waves

Hi toolate. Glad you are getting some waves on it.
I had a feeling your 70kg body weight would handle it OK since the stability for my 80kg weight on this board is my absolute minimum on minimal choppy water. But I haven't used it that often either so I may improve on it if I did.
My next board up is my favourite at 110 litres, Sunova Soul good but not perfect stability in a variety of conditions. If I was 70kg then a board around 100 litres would be the same. And a board at 95 litres would have good but a little less stability too like you & your Supertech.
My most stable board is my JP widebody at 124 litres by 32 wide. Your Stun Gun may feel the same for you. Sooooo comfortable but doesn't perform as well. But great in bad choppy conditions.
So I think your absolute minimum volume board with the Supertech shape would be one at about 80 litres. Which would feel like me & my Supertech. But they really are a lot of work but good for stability training.
So I think you are on a winner. Cheers & have fun!

Hey seajuice

my supertech in my opinion, feels a hell of a lot more stable for its volume than it suggests. Def a board that feels longer and more stable than the dims suggest. And def a lot more stable than another 8'2 x 105l
board I've had.
Im similar to toolate @70kg, I've got a sunover flash @93l but my 8'3 supertech @105l feels much more
comfortable all round. Had mine in 1.5xOH barrelling so far and the touch more volume just helps it get that bit earlier., love the flash but the pin tail sucks on anything but clean and not very windy waves as it's slow to take off. The supertech with the squash tail launched a lot earlier.

also a 32" wide board is a MASSIVE difference to his stungun around 29" let along his new supertech around 27".

I agree with this, I've had other boards with similar volume that feel way more tippy. This actually lead me to get the 8'8" to begin with, which was too big for my 78kg, I'm on the 8'2" now and probably could easily paddle the 7'11".

Same goes for the Super Frank, I'm on the 7'6" lean, and could definitely go down in volume a bit more if it improved performance.

HI guys,
Glad you all like your Super Tech's & the one common theme is that Jimmy's boards are always way more stable than the size & litres suggest... As I've mentioned in another post my new 7'7 Destroyer at 29" wide & 100L (I'm 6'1 & 82kg) is the most stable yet performance orientated sup, other than my 7'10 Super Tech when I had it, that I've ever had...
This is why Jimmy is one of the world's best shapers...Still hands on after 50 years!

Rhode Island USA! We get close interval lines that look exactly like the ones in the pic you posted.

Not much fun paddling out!

Haha it sucks massively! Theres a reason I'm usually the only sup at that beach when everyone else is on shortboards!

Check this paddle-mission I had the other week! Nothing like watching a well overhead set about to fold right in front of you! Got smoked by set after set

only probelm i am having now is i cant get my wax to stick. Laid down some base coat and then sticky bumps but after every session and sometimes mid session where i stand the wax is all but gone. Even thinking of going to a deck pad but i love the graphics too much

I'd suggest making a "hard" base coat with hexatraction, Van Der Waal, grip paints, grip tapes... and cover with wax.

Then if the wax wears out mid-session, you still have a backup grip. And they are thin enough to keep the direct-to-deck feel. Plus the wax will avoid any chafing/rash that may happen with these waxless grips on long sessions.

Get a good deck grip and no more time consuming & messy wax.

I would message jimmy lewis direct and get some advice because the deck pad they use on my surf and race board works well in my opinion, It is somehow sticky and soft and not hard or can dimple and tear easily.

I'm sure others will have more input soon on what's there fav deck pad.
