I have an 88 Speeed that is but big for me now. Hardly use it even though it was my go
to board for nearly 18 months Before shifting the board I was thinking about trying to change fin set up to make it looser .
Has anyone tried as a twin ?
With all the channels and straight outline it needs something at larger sizes to loosen it up as I can't get right back on tail all the time ....just too much board in front of me and swing weight / length is pretty significant at my tall height of 162 cm and 60 kg weight
Hi Gboots. Yes I tried my 8'10" Speeed twinned with two large Cdrives. For me it was too loose and hard to keep it track9ng paddling into waves. Changed to medium Cdrives with a small trailer and all good, still tracks but turns well also. -perhaps if you tried large twins it might work?
Cheers
Bob
Hi
I used MR twins on an 8'8" Speed and they worked well up to bout head high. I'm lighter at 70 kg. Found it faster and looser in smaller waves.
C-Drive Twins on longboards work and are quite fun, but you will need to add a small trailer for control on waves above thigh/hip high.
Twin fin has been combined with Vee tail and flat tail rocker since the beginning when it gets conceptualized for the first time. As the Speed got a concave bottom and tail lift with a correct thruster fin position close to the rail, fitting Twin fin which is large and deep fins should not make work the Speed properly.
Twin fin whatever its shape or size need a whole other concept of board. Like this one I recently design.

3ft max on the Speeed. More likely 1-2ft . Anything bigger and it loses control at 122L
Gboots. Not sure what fins you are presently using but with the Cdrive I regularly have the Speeed out in shoulder to head high beach break and control is good and confidence building. I think the board would go in even bigger waves but I start to get too anxious once it gets overhead. I often have to surf around proners in the water and I feel in control and not putting them at risk. Yes the 8'10" board is big but to me it seems surprisingly nimble. If you can, try a set of Cdrives or perhaps even Quobba fins? Cheers
Bob
FRP the Speeed has felt very "stiff"
compared to the other boards I have.
The Acid is longer and almost identical volume but feels much more nimble and is now my all round board . I have smaller
boards (Starby Pro 8 and an ECS Slab 7.5) which i am confident on.
Just want to see if there is something I can try on my old Speeed before I make decision on selling

If u sell the speed u wont get another ! If i had to ride or paddle a board without fins i know which one im choosing ! Fins r overated untill u need them !

I have not ridden the Speeed as a twin, but
I did try my 9'4 Creek as a twin, with 105 sides
The board lost drive and didn't gain enough to compensate for loss of drive.
The channels are great for drive and control, but don't lend to loose and slippery.
I didn't have my MR Twinz at the time, and may revisit it with sides with more base length than my 105's
as always.... a video to give context to the words.

Last Supper are you a fan of the Speeed?
Why wouldn't I get another ?
When I test rode a speed I found the stock fins terrible. I threw on a set of my own sides and a smaller trailer and it really changed the board.
Might try and and use the Sunova stock fins before investing further.
105's in the sides and the 83's from baby Flow at the back
I find my 8'10" Speeed a bit unstable in anything other than perfect conditions, which I rarely see at my break. I'm using the stock fins. Can anyone suggest fin changes that might make it more stable? I love the board ON a wave but paddling constantly while waiting for a set is a pain. I can't really afford a new Sup atm so any advice on how to change some of the stability characteristics would be welcome. [I'm willing to admit that this rider may share some of the "stability" blame.]

You wont gain any noticeable stability with changing fins and stay in surfable sizes (i.e. without getting 12" fins)
Working on your stance will reap huge benefits, however, see:

GBoots i am ahappy punter when it comes to the speed ive ridden 9.2 down to 7.11 but most happy on the 8.5 played with fins and twins best combo 4 me is large c drives and sometimes small rear ! The only reason i said you wont get another is that the bamboo is gone and new sunnovas will b paulona ! Thats wots on the grapevine ? Ive had waves on the speed wondering when the rail is going to release !

Colas, many thanks. I do stand parallel, as you explain, but try to switch quickly to surf stance just as I catch the wave. Time for a rethink and reset. I'll get the Speeed out and try again. Ta for the advice.
