I was just wondering what board would be better just from cruising around in the harbour with. And maybe catching some small waves. I am looking for a fast stable board to take my dog on with me, which would be better?

I have a few different offers for SUP ATX boards, even though there all good offers (all bellow 1100, new + paddle), I am just wondering which board is better.

Have you tried them both out?

Have a friend who has been borrowing a SupAtx Board and doesn't like the feel of the grip under her feet.

It is obviously a personal thing, I haven't ridden a SupAtx or Surftech so can't comment, but would suggest if possible to take them both for a test run and see which ones feels better.

Good luck.

2 different boards!!!
one's very good quailty and will surf well and last for eva and the other is great if you want to get in to the sport nice and cheap!. A few things to way up, resale how long the board will last how many times it will be in the repair shop and what that will cost!!

Hi all, since I've broken the drought I thought that I might as well go the whole hog and relate my experience of the seemingly much maligned 12ft SupAtx LR. Firstly, it comes with a carbon Fibre paddle guys- a good one, so knock $300.00 odd bucks off the purchase price for starters. This board has been a fantastic addition to my now two board quiver. Any decent waves and I go straight to the McTavish (9'6") but anything less than two foot and this board really rocks. I have caught waves at Willy in Port Phillip at 6 inches +. It would I feel perform reasonably well on a downwinder but my job, my shyness, my wife and kids have prevented me from trying to join one of DJ and his disciples little escapades. I've had a go on a 12' 6" Fanatic BOP board and this seems to have many of the same attributes except less tippy. Obviously the hull on the Fanatic is excellent for cutting through chop, but anything sideshore makes it a little unstable as it is a purpose designed race board.

The SupAtx on the other hand is short enough to surf on the runners and still capable of linking with the next, or following piece of chop (this is from close in shore trialling). From an entertainment perspective the kids can use it as a tanker and diving board. My four year old daughter who was wearing a PFD and doing a tandem paddle with me, wanted to know why the board was moving and I wasn't paddling. I duly informed her that she had just officially caught her first wave. I am around a 100 kg and 185cm and loved getting back to the laid back feel of the larger board. It is far more manouverable than the 11 ft NSP (because of the rail design), I started Supping on and glides beautifully in flat water. I've been reading a lot about the larger name brands and feel that this is a good option for those on a limited budget (I'd still love to own a 12'6" Fanatic or Bark) but think that for now I'll be happy with the el cheapo -Oh and did I mention the paddle? One warning. they are honest to goodness fibreglassed and therefore need to be treated with a little more respect than moulded boards. Keep a tube of Solar Rez or a roll of Duct tape handy in case of emergency. I think DTM may have said 'it doesnt matter about equipment it's the motor that counts'. This board will let you work on your motor and enjoy doing so while keeping the rest of the family entertained as well!! Cheers Leroy.

Thanks Leroy for the detailed response. If I could get a SUP ATX for 1050 (Paddle included) or a Laird for 1150 (Paddle Included, but not as good as the ATX paddle). Should I still go for the ATX? I am only about 65kg and my dog is 10... I know the 12 is a bit bigg for me so I might get the 11 if I get a SUP ATX, but I still want good speed so thats why I want the bigger board.

Hi Jess, IMO the SUP ATX is a good board. Its not just a beginners board because you can actually surf on it quite easily if you are an experienced surfer. The 11 footer would be plenty big for you. My four year old daughter weighs 24kg and I weigh 98kg. We caught a six inch wave in choppy conditions in Port Phillip Bay and she still hasn't stopped talking about it! The Laird 12 footer at that price sounds a great buy as well, but probably at least a foot too long for your weight. The longer the board the harder the board is to turn when you are at the lighter end of the scale. The Laird is probably an epoxy mould and therefore bullet proof, where as the SUP ATX is a fibreglass over foam product. Every body says it - try and demo as many as you can to work out what suits you best and don't let anyone push you into making a rash decision. Spending a lot of time in the water so that someone can make a commision out of you is not fun. You won't go far wrong with either of those boards, though I think an eleven footer is more the length you need, Have a look at the NSP range as well, you can get a good deal on those sometimes. Cheers Leroy.
