As spotted by Kami in my post on the Quatro thread, new custom 7'8 twin fin under way! First time messing with step rails and need to do more work on them plus tail shape and get the bottom rail turned but getting there!

28 3/4 wide and around 108 litres. Twin plus trailer

Yes Kovert, like the Hipster Twin from SMIK already done it, Twin fin concept thought as a SUP is a more accurate shape than other SUP shape. The Twin concept is the purpose to add static stability by enlarging the tail without losing any reliable behaviour to the Quatro or Thruster and more of that gain of static stability standing on in a waiting period or during the quick paddling strokes to take off, it's adding stability and drive while surfing with the benefit of a longer rail line and a large and powerful fin at the end of that long rail . The bonus of the Twin fins concept is that: it's giving looseness on the top of the stability of the single fin round pin. Kovert you made the right choice
Reading the PM you send to me about the CNC hasn't cut properly your file, I've got the same issue with some boards as this one had been cut in NZ that I've to convert the S3Dx into a version 8 with no editing of curves. What a shame! but your hand shaping experience will fix that as Graeme did in NZ helped by this video.

So, two re-shapes, material shortages and so on, finally got a board home. Stoked!

Clearly not a twinny any more but fingers crossed will go well as a quad. Single concave through to double through the fins to vee tail. Step tail to hide some float. Final dims 7'5 x 28 3/4" x 4 7/16" x 106 litres(ish!)

Thanks for the positive feedback! Managed a first outing early morning this week, dropping swell and a bit gutless but some chest high sets. Firstly stoked it paddles and floats me way better than I expected! At 86kg currently plus 4mm wetty I was a little concerned but hopped straight on. The step deck seems to work well with the rails submerged gripping the water. Nice and light under foot, weighed in just over 6kg bare.
Take off was nice and easy, even the slacker ones it picked up and went on. Need to work out exactly where to put my back foot, trimming it felt great, first time I really pushed right on the back of the kicker it turned way faster than I was ready for! Bit too far forward on the next and it was much more drawn out.
I've always ridden big fins but I think I can drop some area on this one with no negative impact, can't wait to experiment waves here have been terrible of late.
Super pleased for a first outing though, can't wait to get it dialled in!

6kg sounds light for that size...what fins did you try on already?

I love posts like these.

Guys posting ideas and pics of boards that they have created, designed and made themselves. Nothing beats the feeling of the first surf on a board that you shaped and mystery feeling of not knowing how it will surf.

Kovert , love the clean lines and shape of your board. It looks like it will rip.

Nice job Kovert ..love the hips on my boards too ,it will be a snappy little number ,a bit small for me to ride ,you'll be glad you didn't take the thinned rails out to far up the nose ,the new flow goes a bit too far up ,and it is easily redirected when paddling for the waves
you'll be throwing that around like a rag doll

Quick update, found the groove and a good fin set up today! Glassy but a little weak chest high sets, enough pocket to get back foot planted and it all happened. Good speed, flows between turns beautifully and a great snap off the top, super happy! The recovery from a snap in to the next bottom turn felt great and didn't really stall much at all.

The usability at the bottom end has caught me by surprise a bit, the volume flow has kept it super stable and feels like the step rails definitely help. Still picks up waves really easy for a 7'5!

Kept big fins in the front and dropped the rears to a double foiled set which felt way more positive. Will try and get some pics or footage of me riding it over the (uk) winter!

Can you tell us a little more about how the stepped rails changes the way it rides?

So, a couple more good sessions under my belt now and getting it all figured out! Step rails are really nice surfing it more forward when pumping for speed. They hold a nice high line and I'm finding its really only my my back foot I need to move to change from driving to turning.

There is still a fair but if volume on the stringer under the back foot which I've found really helps coming out of hard turns to get things moving back down the line quickly and for popping it up on to the lip. Could do with being thinned out a touch maybe in the very back to sink a little more in some situations but to be honest this one was never designed for bigger than head high anyway so fits the brief.

I'll add a centre plug for a thruster option soon and kicking myself for not doing it in the first place as I think it would add another radius for turning and keen to see how the rails work in a thruster configuration!

Still super stoked with it and the feel in particular is much more big surfboard than super stiff sandwich feel. Deck is holding up well, no sink and slightly thicker from pads definitely seem to have aided that without re moving too much feel.

If all goes well I have another board drawn up I'm aiming to get started on in a couple months time
