Timeless classic. Still my go to board in any conditions. 8'10" very stable and fun to just paddle around. Likely keep it forever........well someone else will enjoy it when I can't surf. I take the 8'7" Creek out when it is glassy. We have moved to Tofino and as soon as this Covid thing ends I can move over and surf every day. For now trying to help out here in Vancouver.
Cheers,
Bob

Good on ya Gboots!I love your stoke. Did you trade your 7'7" Flow on the Speeed?
No TBM . Not selling anything at moment . I actually took Flow out this morning for a flat water paddle and a few waves . Getting better but i must look like a goose.
Always feel like i am about to fall in as I am just about to catch wave. If i manage to hang on and ride the wave the 77 Flow is awesome even in tiny mushy waves. At worst it's a good for my fitness
The speed is still my go to board for all occasions.I use it as anoserider as well as a freestyle ripper.I have creeks, placids, style available but still go the speed.I will admit there are days when it just does my head in tipping me in but most times its rider fatigue or tricky conditions, all this is forgiven when you hook into a screaming forehand rattler, still struggle going as hard backhand on it tho.I guess from sunovas point of view if it aint broke dont fix it.I have the 8.8 &8.10 used with c drives, bloody fantastic.Ps if you are going to nose ride em with cdrives give yaself some room as they do quite like to let go into a 360 which is ok,tends to spread the crowd nicely.

I struggle going backhand with my speeed also. Never had a problem with other boards I've owned, sup or prone, not that I can recall anyway. Anyone got any ideas why this maybe, beside lack of skill?
Still wouldn't get rid of my speeeds either.
It's the pack of curve in outline .....need to get foot back. I struggle to do much on backside at best of times .
Took out 88 Speeed yesterday in 1-2ft fatties . Once you get on it's so smooth . I put a small back fin and two stock fins on sides . It really turned hard on the bottom turn when going right and stepping back as far back as I could go where the tail kicks in. Almost pivot like .
Yet to test my 711. Stability will be interesting because I still get the wobbles sometimes even on 88.

Backside is custom made for SUP!
Heels put more weight on the rail
Butt hangs over the rail to really give a lot of leverage to carve a turn.
On Speeed, back foot must be over the side bite or further back.
Turning from the middle is much harder and slower because of the parallel rails....
it tends to "track" if you're back foot isn't over the sidebite.
Use your paddle as a skimmer, rather than a pivot... I find "pivoting" around the paddle can easily drag you off your board...
"skimming" provide a moving brace that helps balance your movement.
Be brave... project out over the rail and it will snap right around!
Have fun!!!

STC, thanks for that vid. I've been unimpressed with my Speeed in chop but love it on a wave. Your feet placement and shifts open a whole new world for me. Next surf I'm out there and that back foot will be dancing' ! Cheers.

i thought I had watched all your videos and then you pull out this great demonstration of backside foot placement. You never cease to amaze me!

Thanks for the video, much appreciated, certainly given me a few things to concentrate on. The waves I mostly surf and give me the most trouble on, surfing the backhand, have a reasonably steep take off and I find I get myself behind the 8 ball on the takeoff, lose speed and I struggle to regain it.
thanks again.
Has anyone who hAs has a speeed, also has a hypernut or gulliver vbox, or hipster? I'd be intrigued to know how they all go. I've always found those tomo style boards go really well, but haven't had one with a tomo nose but pulled in tail before.
Hey Benjl, I've just added an 8'8 Speeed (123 Litres) to my 7'10 Hipster (109 L) and 8'5 (118 L) Nut (not hypernut) quiver. I've demo'ed Speeeds before and really enjoyed them as my "bigger board", as they seem to catch the smallest ripple (big nose allows you to move a long way forward when trying to catching just a bump) and you stomp on the tail and they cutback like a weapon. My Hipster doesn't require the same active foot placement that the Speeed responds so well too, so find this a better shape to ride "smaller" than your comfort zone. The Nut is the Goldilocks of the three. Not sure that answers your question?

Get that back foot back and give it to the rail, tail, inside fin and channel. Plenty of hold.
Not the best quality shots but demonstrates back foot planted.

You are killing it . Way advanced . Thanks for posting for us mere mortals
Took the 711 out today for first time for a surf . Small but glassy conditions . She's a beauty . So smooth like butter . Getting on tail do much easier . Turns nicely . Found back way easier . Short but easy to paddle in waves . A bit of a wobble as only 26 and a bit wide. Secondary stability is great I think i am going to have some good times with this one .

This is good to watch move like you did on that backhand attack. Did you made it down the bottom of that bowl

Yeah Kami, no probs completing a few off the tops on that wave. Very rare occasion my beautiful girlfriend took a few photos. Really good, uncrowded waves that day.
The bottom turn is a screen grab from a video the very talented Chappo took of Casso and I at Wallyworld.
I tend to use large fins on the side and smaller centre on the Speed. So much lift and drive??
i really liked how on edge it got on the backhand bottom turns. Not bad forehand either.
I have found that the Speeed is the best all round low volume Sup I have ridden. This one 7'3"x 24@ 73L. The ability to go short and Narrow without increasing rail thickness is such a good balance. I have used smaller, lower volume, higher rocker and outline curved boards. They may have gone better in some waves or parts of the wave. But the Speeed was so much more stable and faster to Paddle, any losses in performance far outweighed by ease of use.
Took out the 711 this arvo in 3ft (closeouts , mush and some decent ones ). The board is rock solid . No more getting thrown off like would often happen on 88. Paddled into everything . Didn't miss a wave . Even handled the large close out rubbish. Felt safe. On decent waves was so easy to manoeuvre.
Fell off a bit whilst waiting due to a lot of water movement . When paddling for wave very stable unlike the 77 Flow which can be hard for paddling on to waves when slightly off sweet spot (need to keep my centre of balance very low).
I really love the 711
Encouraging to read your comments G Boots. How much do you weigh?
Were all still firmly locked down here in South Africa. Cant wait to get into the sea again.
Sorry FRP, I can't agree. I had my 8"10' Speeed out in better than average conditions yesterday and it was a pain in the a**e. It could easily be my fault with balance etc, but my other Sup [9'5" x 31] is super stable, catches waves easier and is fun to turn from middle or tail. At no time can I relax on the Speeed while waiting for waves. I know most on this forum disagree but that's just my take on it. Good luck to those who CAN ride the Speeed. Mine will be on the market before long. Cheers, Jimbo
Took 711 out again today . Have surfed it 3 times and I feel way comfortable . It's an amazing board at this length . Reckon in a year I could go down a size but not sure if any real benefit . Maybe will mean I can get foot back even easier .....

I am wondering if boards with a wider nose than the tail need a different balance technique than boards with wider tails than their fronts.
I was extremely surprised to not being able to stand up anymore on my favorite "chesty" board after spending some months on "assy" ones. Maybe your other boards have stabler tails?
