Hi everyone.
I am 6' 3" - 85 kg and currently ride a Cabrinha 10'2" and am looking for more surf/wave orientated board. I am very interested in the jp surf 9'6" and the surftech merrick caddie 9'7''. I have been able to demo the jp but not the surftech. Does anyone have any experience of these boards. I am wanting to compare stability, glide and just plain fun on 2 to 6 foot waves. Thanks

I am 88kg and have the JP 9'6" surf, it's a really good board, love it!

They are domed, not real heavily though, enough to maintain good volume while giving a thinner rail for performance.
Hi - the surftech caddy 9"7" is a great board -- type in to google to get a u tube vid of the welsh bloke surfing -- great stuff but a bit of an ol mal rider style -- I changed the supplied fins over to shapers rubin roxburgh 2 by 4.5 and a 5.5
The board goes very well in good surf - see pic below - also easy to paddle and catch waves - goes alright in beach breaks but not as good in small choppy conditions

I have a JP surf widebody (not Surf) and love it. If it is a close call between the two above then maybe little other things might make a difference. eg the handle in the JP that I have is SUPERB - making carrying the SUP much much better as I have a longish walk in. And....the SUP is pretty light compared to others at the same sort of dims. On durability...no idea. Think Surftech are pretty tough...will just have to see with the JP.
Personally - looking at the JP surf (a chap posted some good pics on the Zone) I think the design/rails etc look pretty spot on. I have seen Guts surfs his 9ft 7 Caddy on the vids (the Welsh chap) and it looks like it turns great too.......but JP gets my vote.

I know that this is not what you asked for, but since you're 85kg and want to have fun (already going for high performance SUP surfing shapes), why don't you consider the JP Surf Pro 8'10 or the JP Surf Wide body 8'2.At about 125 ltr they will float you and your imaginary friends with no problem.If you like a challenge go with the 8'6 @110ltr (for you weight, i'd actually go with this one).
I would say that if you're really committed to it you could even go with the 8'2 or the 8'0 but that's a step I'd wait a bit longer to take as there will be a huge difference in stability.
Try to demo one of the above and if you're struggling a bit in the beginning remember: it's normal. demo it in pure flat water to see how it floats you because as you get used to the board it will be like stealing candies from babies.
The only reason i'm saying this is because SUP boards are way too expensive to change everyday, and you get used to them really fast. So, even if you're fighting the board on your first attempts, it will be just a matter of weeks...

Good point.....if you are doing 2-6 ft then can recommend the JP Surf Widebody - I am a bit heavier than you at 90kg plus 5/4 hooded wetsuit and have the 8ft 8 - it is a really nice board to surf and very stable. If you have decent surf then the 8ft 2 would be fun...my surf is pretty weak beach break and the 8ft 8 is ideal. I'll learn a lot of using this board.
mmm - this is getting interesting. I did test the jp 8'8 wide body surf on still water - stable as and I reckon would come alive in the waves. my wife and I occasionally camp beside still water and take our sups with us. the 9'6" had a bit more glide than the 8'8 wide body but ...? - waves is where we will spend most of our time. You are right sups are way too expensive to change everyday and it is hard to project out 12 to 18 months and what we will be able to handle then.
The 8ft 8 isn't going to be much fun on flat water but it is a lot of fun in the surf. Had mine out in some pretty messy choppy stuff today and it surprised me how well it handled it stability wise. Got a few waves too - although they were short lived in the conditions. I'd say the 9ft 6 would be a better all rounder but if surfing is your game

Not sure how - probably when I was paddling out and a wave threw my board up just as I jumped off - nose of board smashed into my chest. must have creased it underneath. Half an hour later - and some nice waves - noticed a crack across the bottom. limped back to shore and found had cracked right through to the deck.
I was saving madly for a new board - this has now sped things up.

In terms of boards I have also been reading the forums on the fanatics and have a guy on the gold coast who is mad keen on the NSP 9'2''. Choices!? - at this stage leaning toward the JP surf 9'6''.

The Al Merricks are an old design going back a couple of years. The have the old style edge running along the tucked edge for the full length of the board, this is not good for SUP surfing as it catches a rail alot of the time.
A mate of mine has the 9'0 so I see the board on a regular basis. He is saving up to get a cust 9'4 from me which is a dedicted SUP surf board.
Thanks boardbumps that is helpful. I had been conscious that the merricks were an old design. Will look into a custom made board as well as the jp's.
JP Surf wide body's are flat as a tack decks. Just lovely! Super stable
One thing on the Wide Body 8 8. I have had mine 6 mths or so and given it a pounding! Had a 5th fun box put in so I can Quad, Thruster or combi. Makes the board react differently in waves. Over 4' and I go thruster. Just a super board, most happy and plenty of fun learning to go. Can only speak highly of it.
Thanks again everyone. In the end I have just bought the new naish hokua 9'1" x 32". Super stable paddling out and waiting out the back. Super loose in the wave -scarily so - but tons of fun. Also bought my wife the jp surf 9'2" so big smiles all round
