Heading out to Bali in July and wondering which spots are best to sup and stay on the west coast ? Any thoughts from the collective most welcome.

Medewi mmmmm...........

Surfing through super crowded take off zones on the bigger set waves that are missed by the prone guys is super dangerous and that happens here.

Expat's from NSW and a few Medewi locals do not enjoy sharing the line up with SUP surfers.

Keeping Medewi SUP free is their objective, apparently there s even a sign that says no SUP here.

I would not recommend travelling that far for such an average wave as you will more than likely be asked to move along.

Going left in Indonesia 2017

I was there a few years ago and do recall the sign, shame that is that way/has got to that point as it is a really good fun wave.

At the time I was on the Mal and that was really good - some of the best waves I got were when people on the inside missed the wave and then called me in and I just got on easier on the Mal, can imagine it would be even easier on a SUP.

Has anyone seen any aggro or poor SUP behaviour that has led to that sort of mentality towards SUP there?

Yeah ideally looking for rights being a regular footer and hate aggro on the wave so the search continues

Not may rights on the west coast. You could try Balian. Pretty mellow vibe there. There is a good right ( sand dependant ) on the other side of the river mouth. The most popular wave there is the fat left....not sure why tho. It is longer but nowhere near as shapely. Balian is a nice place to stay but not much there. Gets plenty of swell, sometimes too much. Another right is airport rights but that needs a big swell to get going. You need to get a boat from Kuta side or you could paddle from Jimbaran Bay. The only other right I can think of is Canggu but that would be a no go zone on a SUP. Good luck!

Just back from Bali yesterday and spent 3 days at the Bombora wave lodge in Medewi.
What a spot!!
I didn't get any hassle on the SUP (at least any worse than at home) but did hang wide most of the time as it gets pretty crowded in the middle once everyone gets out of bed. I was the only SUP on the break but there were plenty of Mals and plenty of learners being pushed in by the locals.... this can be a bit of a hazard but the break is pretty easy to read and if you sit just outside it is easy to jump on the wider waves.
There is also a pretty good looking right hander around the corner and heading into the next (southern) bay and while we had 30 odd on the main break, there were only 5-6 guys out there.... I didn't look much up the beach (to the north) but there would be reasonable beach banks there as well. The local guys were pretty good IMO... had a good chat to a few... bought the compulsory T-shirt to support the local board riders and a couple of photo discs and didn't have any hassle from them. They are aggressive surfers though and have got the break absolutely wired. Interestingly I did see a couple of older guys send some young crew back inside after they got a bit keen on the main take off.... there is definitely a hierarchy there.

We stayed at the Bombora wave lodge for the 3 days which was phenomenal... a shade on the exy side for Bali but absolutely overlooking the main break, the most comfortable beds in Bali and the best quality food.... well worth it! We also stayed 2 nights at the Puri Dajuma Eco lodge which is on the next point south.... another fantastic place to stay (especially if you are with the family) and it is only about 1km up the beach to the Medewi main break (10-15min drive in the free shuttle). There are some good little banks along this beach as well and no people!

So early May was pretty good at Medewi but apparently Jun/Jul the place is packed! Personally, I would steer clear at that time just to save the hassle of the crowd but this spot has definitely made my off season list!!

Went back to Legian after that and the swell had picked up... There were a few good banks there on the high tide but the clean up sets were brutal. Didn't have time to get out to Kuta Reef but it would have been great out there too.....
