Anyone else ever done this before?
i was riding a wave yesterday (maybe head height with a bit of juice), initiated a bottom turn and then as I was coming up the wave my board hit some chop at high speed and kicked the front of the board up from under me. I managed to get my foot back down but jammed my toes vertically down in the board while doing so. was pretty painful but thought I'd just stubbed it and kept on surfing.
Then the bruising and swelling started!
Just came back from the hospital And turns out I managed to crack part of the bone clean off in the joint from my foot to my toe!
anyone else ever done something similar? god I've had some bad luck recently!

Bugger benjl, looks sore.
It'll heal mate. I'm still looking for the end of my finger.....lol. I feel it may have ended up as fish food.
Not as deadly as the fin chop I received on my thigh though, my wetty saved me that time.
Neither of these injuries, or many other minor ones have turned me off what I love doing though. Maybe I'm just a slow learner?
Should I post pics? They're pretty gruesome......

Bugger it, here goes....

Fin chop, longboard side fin, 1&1/2 mm from the femoral artery. Quite the show!

And tadaaaaaaah! Good as new! Sort of....

And my piece de resistance (drum roll), ripping the end off my finger with my leg rope.......the pics a little fuzzy, not sure why.....

And patched up, back in the water 3 & 1/2 weeks later! Hoorah!

Broke my finger getting up on my mal. Finger caught on wax as I was standing up and rode the wave in with my finger 90 degrees bend from middle joint. Snapped it back in and carried on.w

Wow brenno! Holy crap!
its funny you mention about the leash, I'm assuming it somehow wrapped around your finger and just pulled the tip off?

ive had something similar and thought I was gonna lose my foot or pull a tendon or something.
One time, the leash managed to form a noose and wrap around my neck and then went taught! That was scary. But yours certainly takes the cake! cant believe that fin wound, through your wettie!
@chrisM, how did you know I did this at Orewa?? Certainly the biggest I've seen it there in a while (not big-big), but the odd head high sets had some grunt. My hypernut was absolutely fanging down the wave when this happened. It's the first time I've felt the board kind of Max out speed and was so stiff and rigid when it hit that chop. did you make it out for a sup?

I was having an early surf in some post cyclone sucky dumpy surf, and went to grab my 10 footer as it went over the falls. My ring finger all tangled up in my leg rope was no match for such a big board coffining away from me. Ping! Drew my hand up out of the murky water looking straight down at a hole with a shard of bone poking out. My first thought was for my daughter surfing near me, and to get her out and away from my burley trail. My second was for my job as a hands on mech tech. Life goes on. I consider myself lucky. The surgeon said my choice of that particular finger was very lucky. I agree.
The fin chop was many years previous. I still have that wetty. The cut in the rubber is only about an inch long. The cut in my thigh was about 6 inches, so the wetty sprang back and held it all together while it clotted. Apart from some nerve damage it all still works.
I'll keep SUP surfing while I'm on the right side of the grass, and physically able. If I could offer any advice to anyone struggling a little bit, go surfing - anyway you can.

Jeeez Brenno. This happened to a mate of mine on our annual surf trip. I thought it was a freak accident but looks like its a thing. Ripped the end clean off. We were 4 hours from hospital. Luckily it didn't bleed much and he said he had no pain at all!

So true.
Ping. It was gone. Pumped out a few spurts, not much pain, not a bad design really.
I was at the foo fighters concert 2 days later. Most sober I've ever been at a concert, and I really enjoyed it with my kids.
Sh1t happens, time heals.......

It's where 90% of coasties SUP so a lucky punt.

It's too fat at Orewa so I went a stones throw away from the crowd and scored far better waves. See my pic in "Where did you SUP today".

The peninsula has quite a few spots that start working when there is a bigger swell, you just gotta search a little bit

Haha what a guess! I normally sup at te arai as orewa is a bit small and flat but for once there some decent 2-3ft waves! prob hadn't seen it that consistent or size for a couple of years.
I sup-surfed goat island a few times when there's decent swell, can get pretty hollow there but gets a bit hairy when the big rocks expose themselves from the water!

Wow Benji looks sore. I saw the Orewa web cam on Saturday morning and looked really busy, a mate stopped through and said car park was packed.
Brenno wins for most carnage !
Chris M, yes saw photo of uncrowded secret spot - nice

Ah! That looks painful. Did you do that on a rigid or an inflatable? I'm guessing rigid.
