Hey all,

Can anyone who's using Lock Racks advise if there's capacity/room to fit a paddle in the corner/s where the arm meets the rack? (ie. next to / beside the board inside the rack).

From pictures it seems there may be space? Acknowledged that it may not be 'secured' the same as the board is as it may be a looser fit, but just curious if anyone's doing this as I can't fit a paddle inside my car, and am considering Lock Racks as an alternative to Kanu Lock straps.

Carrying a 9'5" Sunova Speeed with a width of just over 31" and thickness of 4 7/8" so presume would need the 65cm base with the Single SUP arms?

Cheers

I use the Yakima SUP racks. With the board in a cover i can put the paddle laying on top of the cover and pull the straps down. Works a treat. Best racks i have ever used.

Hi ob, I don't put paddles in with board as I have a couple of paddles in a bag that tends to be bulky. I did however entertain the idea when I first received lockracks and with one paddle not in a bag it should be doable ( but I haven't)
there website suggests boards over 30" use 65cm base and they're on special at the moment, I highly recommend these racks, save so much time and no more accidentle tie downs on roof of car. Just curious though why you can't fit a paddle in your car?

By the way if you have a board bag and paddle cover you can slide the paddle inside board bag with no pressure being applied as lockrack arms do not lay on board flat areas only rails

Hey Mick,
Thanks for the responses. The paddle inside the car is doable, but only if my other half isn't occupying the passenger seat as it's a small car and the paddle goes from the inside of the hatch into the passenger footwell to fit. All good if I'm on my own, but if we're both in the car, and/or have bags etc. in there as well for a weekend away, it becomes a pain in my other half's butt, therefore a pain in mine!!

Good to know a paddle may (caveat noted!) fit in that corner of the Lock Rack without a cover, as sometimes I like to rinse board & paddle off after use, the. Transport home out of the cover to give it a chance to dry.

Point taken about shoving paddle in a cover inside the board cover as there's no downward pressure from straps that would push the paddle into the deck of the board or damage the paddle shaft.
I think I'll give them a burl - they're a good price at the moment! Cheers!

Thanks Browy,

Have you had any issue with the straps pulling the paddle into the deck of the board or damaging the paddle shaft?

Cheers

I have these and they are bloody fantastic. In strong winds throwing a big board on your roof its a lifesaver. There is space along side the board for your paddle BUT I would not do it. The paddle in some situations would slide out OR be too tight and rub against the board. Put it in your board bag much better.

I use lock racks, their great but for my paddle I use these. You could fit a couple of paddles.and fishing rods.

A bit late to the party, but just echoing what others have said. The lock racks are great, I have toyed with the idea of some sort of holder (paddle/shovel holder) on the end of the roof rack beside one of the lock rack arms, that would work but it would not allow me to pull the arms on that side out of the lock racks and lay them flat. If you don't mind having one side permanently vertical, this isn't an issue.

That's a very good point re. not being able to lay the arms flat if there's an extra holder installed. Thanks Have ordered a set now so will muck around with the possibilities when they arrive. Cheers

I see your point, however the type of rod holders that I use, the ones in the picture, cAn be taken on and off in less than 30 seconds. In less time than it takes to take an arm out and lay it flat. Plus I only tend to use them on longer trips where it is inconvenient to have paddle in car.

Yes, I am definitely going to use this for longer trips where my car will be packed with other stuff. I've been trying to find some that would securely attach to the lock rack arms, so they can still be taken out and laid flat

I've seen a few older posts on the Breeze advising that the 'key' that comes with the Lock Racks is (was?) plastic and could 'strip' fairly easily. Has there been any change to the keys, or is just a matter of being a bit careful with them (one of the original posts mentioned making sure you were pushing the arm of the rack in as your turn the key and it's fine)?

Tips & hints appreciated - mine are in transit and should be delivered today/tomorrow. Pretty stoked to give them a burl

Plastic is fine, yes you got it push in on arm as you turn key. I actually think having the keys ( you get several ) plastic is a good thing as I see it, I'd rather replace a plastic key than damage the lock with a metal key.
enjoy

They look interesting but I tried to contact them about the possiblity of getting an unmatched pair ( race board big one end , thin the other so can't use both big not both small) and they didn't even bother to reply. Not even to tell me to stuff off. They haven't got much stock at the moment either by the looks. Most of the rack sizes are shown as sold out.

I think they're running reduced hours at the moment, possibly due to COVID?

I sent an email. I guess the reduction must be to zero.

If you use Facebook Messenger at all, give them a try there - I got a response to a query pretty quickly. Otherwise try calling them Monday or Friday - I think that's their working days at the moment

Any users of Lock Racks - I'm after some advice. Have fitted mine to factory aero-style bars, and am now getting a horrible whistling noise from 30kmh & up, with the arms laid flat (no board). I've taken the rubber strip out of the roof bars to be able to slide the holding plates for the Lock Racks in, and have a feeling the whistling may be coming from the channel in the roof racks themselves. That, or the ~8mm gap between the top of the bars and the bottom of the Lock Rack base section. Anyone else striking this problem? Maybe if I put the rubber strip back into the roof rack track (leaving space for the Lock Rack bolts & plastic washers) it might help...

Can't imagine it's the gap between the racks and the Lock Racks creating noise as that's a 'through-flow'.

Tips & hints would be appreciated!!!

(apologies for the sideways photos)

Hi

had same thing and I have 2 sets on bar, but had left rubber in roof bar, so used some window draft stop ( thin foam 6mm ) and stuck to underside of lock rack and reinstalled, reduced noise considerably. I don't leave arms in so they also may me factor.

No whistling. I only cut enough rubber out to fit lock plates. Kept the rubber as tight as I could.

Problem solved - reinstalled rubber track underneath and to each side of the bolts from the Lock Racks (as tight as possible to the bolts) and now very little noise. Thanks for the input guys

Just for future reference people, if you have whispbar racks or in fact any rack with a soft rubber insert into track, you leave it in the rack slot and just push it down with bolt and plate of lockrack as you slide it in from end. In other words you don't need to cut rubber strip or remove. I only have a slight whistle at slow speed, once I'm up to 80 kph + there's nothing.

If you are going to put the paddle in the little corner there, put a bit of pool noodle on the shaft about a foot long at each locationj (split the side obviously) Then it will jam in nice and not slide
