Hi to our UK counterparts. I'm heading to North Cornwall to see family around easter and don't plan on flying from Aus with two kids under 8 and my board (my wife said I can't leave the kids behind!).

Any UK SUPers able to recommend somewhere in or near Newquay where I can hire a decent SUP to take out in the surf. Most of the surf schools seem to have inflatables for river use only.

Alternatively are there any forums similar to this that I can ask the question on. Had a look and most of the forums seem to relate to touring and flat water paddling.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, try contacting Extreme academy who are based at Watergate Bay near Newquay. Also try Newquay Activity centre which is at Towan beach Newquay town . Plenty of parking at Watergate and nice big sandy beach for the kids to play and roam. Great beach for sup surfing whereas Towan is bit smaller and can get too crowded for sups . I'm probably heading down for easter and will take a couple of boards so could meet up if I do . Good luck !

Cornwall is a great part of the world to SUP, I went there around 5 years ago and the area from Torquay down to ST IVES and penzance holds a lot of great places to SUP, even the silies off the coast. Just remember this is southern england so when they say a surf beach, its more like a small crumbly wave than pipeline. The water is a bit chilly, but a normal longboard sup would be good. I preferred ST Ives to newquay and penzance over the other two. You can sup around all the bays and small harbours right up the Cornwall coast. Head into see Rick STein restraunt at Penrose or whatever that town is called. :I recommend hiring a mini, or small english car as the roads are tight. Pack in two SUP hardboards, a windcheater and wetsuit and just SUP all day and hit the devonshire teas in the afternoon.

I think you are thinking of Padstow or Porthleven for those Rick Stein restaurants.

The best thing to do for hire is probably to ask on the Standup paddleboarding UK and Ireland Facebook page (6000 members). Someone will hook you up with something decent.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know there are plenty of places to hire, but would rather get something decent than a 10ft monster, plus I'll be borrowing the inlaws car which is too small to transport anything so will have to surf where I hire.

Worst case, I'll hire a shorty or longboard, but just thought it would be nice to SUP my old surfing spots from when I lived in the UK.

I'll be hiring a wetsuit as well as there is no way my 3mm suit will cope with Easter in the UK. The last time I surfed Cornwall at Easter I had a 9mm suit, booties and hood!

Mbuzz if you have in laws over there with a residential address you could get something shipped from Europe to England. SUPBOARDER on Youtube (UK site) seem to review a wide range of boards, both local brands, NAish, Starboard, JP as well as some unique brands to Europe. It may be cheaper to buy a starboard over there than here in Australia for instance. England has some funny tax laws. Also contacting the UK shops by email to see if they have decent boards to hire. Is it not your right as an Aussie to put the biggest SUP board on the smallest car and drive around Cornwall acting like a maniac and dropping in on all those brits. Also the paddle board is going to be a lot warmer than a surfboard. Frozen toes anybody.
