Hi all,

The family and I are going to Oahu in mid September for 16 days. We have booked the East Coast, and Turtle Bay; but need some suggestions for Waikiki.

Best case setup is somewhere with a lagoon for the kids to swim, a good SUP break walking distance for me, and some easy access to restaurants and buses etc as we won't have a car for this portion of the trip.

Hit me up with any suggestions, and fill me in on past experiences there.

Daniel

How the **** are you going to get time to surf? I got a 8 week old and 2 year old and probably get about ten free minutes a day, the drive to and from work is a dead set holiday and I never worry about having to go to work on Monday, on Sunday night, because it's a break compared to being at home. As they get to the age your kids are do you get more time back to surf?

Definitely Hilton Hawaiian Village. And hit up Blue Planet for board rentals or to do a downwind run with Robert. And if the kids are well behaved, Cream Pot is a treat for breakfast/brunch--was recommended to me by my local friends.

Can second the Ilikai. Stayed there a few times and it's a great location for what you need. Same with Hilton I guess but haven't stayed there personally. Aloha

Blue planet is not walking distance to any hotel in waikiki. Quality surfboards rents boards and is right across the street from those hotels mentioned, but its no where near the selection of Bp. I should start a business and start carting all you guys around to surf, that sounds like a dream job.

Oh yeah, those kids are going to love it, the hilton is right on the beach. Stayed there ages ago and liked it. Kids can swim along most of waikiki and in front of all the big resorts/hotels.
Was a bit older than your two though. Get that 4.5 year old onto paddling the foamy as its surf time once you hit the island.
Oh yeah Daniel your going to be into the island life for that long.

You need to set some priorities. It does get better but having kids should never stop you doing what you love, that will just build resentment and frustration.
Hawaii is awesome!! Waikiki has everything, suggestions above are good. I stayed at Diamond Head in a house and used a car so I could cruise the island. So much to see.

As others have said, I recommend Hilton Hawaiian Village. Ticks all of those boxes.

Definitely go and speak with Rob at Blue Planet but also Jeff Chang from Wet Feet Hawaii. Jeff is awesome and will help you out with everything you need.

Food wise - I also recommend checking out Goofy Cafe. It is just downstairs and does really good food. Well priced. Maui Brewing Company also does great food and their beers are really nice. Maybe to nice. Food along the beach is very pricey and the coffee is horrible.

Just don't go eat to many Honolulu Cookie Co cookies and don't go to the Lapperts Icecream place downstairs and have it every night for dessert :)

If you are willing to pay, Sheraton Deluxe Ocean Front Room is awesome .
I did no shopping at those outlets . Screw that. Hawaii is about the ocean.
Can highly recommend Blue Planet and Nalu Storage if you rent board for more than a day. Blue Planet are chilled and deliver and pick up from your location at a reasonable cost.
Had the time of my life at Canoes and
Mini Queens on a 9 x 29 Blue Namotu from BP and I was beginner at best. Respect those around you and embrace the party wave with care. Until you get used to it hang outside ....the benefits of a SUP allow you to do this

Caveman, does the Hilton have board storage available for guests?
The Blue Planet website lists quite a few hotels that DO provide board storage, but unfortunately the Hilton doesn't get a mention.

Hi mate, planning is crucial.

You need something walking distance from the water. Get up for a surf before they wake up, be back for brekky; then run them ragged so they have to have a midday snooze, then you're back out for a midday session.

I don't get to surf as much these days, but that's probably more due to me cycling more. We are hammering the oldest with swimming lessons so I can teach her how to surf as soon as possible.

Thanks for all the tips.

We have been scoping the Illakai and the Hilton. It looks like they will be the two to choose from.

I'm planning to take over my 8'6" JP Surf, and some kitesurfing stuff; so won't need to hire.

Are there any other family attractions on the island that you would recommend? We are doing an anti-clockwise lap of the island over 16 days; starting at Kailua on the east coast

Hey Helmy,
There is definitely the ability to do it, in my opinion, as I saw a number of people bringing boards out from the first floor of our tower

Hired most days last week from Big Wave Dave in Waikiki, basically one street back behind Macca's

boards were ok, couple of those Tom Carrol model, 9' 2" I think. Surfed each morning, mainly at 'pops' as everything else was too busy. Paddle out to Castles on a bigger day but decided it was a little above my skill level. Used 'The Bus' most days after surfing to get around the island, $5.00 US for an all day ticket, great value

Another vote for Hilton Village. I sat the wife and kids at the lagoon each morning then paddles out through the boat channel and around Kaiser's to Inbetweens. Perfect

Danielo, This is what I did, with the family, trip to waimea and then walk to the falls,
Eukhia beachpark, good fun day out.
Visit to the blowhole.
Sea life world, you can swim with dolphins, check ages,
Visit volcano.

There is also a wet and wild on oahu.

Another one for the Hilton Hawaiian Village, stayed there twice and heading there late September after a couple of weeks in California.

We visited the Pearl Harbour Memorial, several Town &Country Surf Design shops ????, The Naish Shop, kited over that side too, North shore worth a look but prob no waves this time of year though, there's a few small villages to explore and great scenery
