First it's cork flooring for the deck. Now it's recycled tyres for foot pads.
Getting a start on post-apocalyptic technology are you Imax?

Tree sap for resin .

Imax, so youre using polyester resin? Why dont you tint the resin like they would glassin a malibu. You could see thru resin to all your great workmanship n interesting use of materials.

Not polyester , a clear epoxy . That's what I used on my last board . Problem is it's heavy if you want to keep it clear and see through . A lot more hard work finishing . The filler coat would weigh twice as much . It's probably going to end up around 15 kg , same as an LT only stronger . I'd estimate if I made it clear and sexy it would add another kg at least . It's at 9.2 kg now.

Great work. With the cork if you use a higher density cork it ends up being lighter as it doesn't suck up as much resin. Especially if you are not vac bagging. It may not be as tough though. I have rolled a light coat of epoxy onto the cork before hand so it doesn't soak up as much epoxy. PU glue also works well to glue cork to foam. Again not sure how this would effect the overall strength in your situation.

Because were all bored and crave pics , ill add my Fangys fins finishing in with the board build .

Two rough cast 28 cm big boys . One for Tuttle and the other PB .

Just cos i can , i milled the bottom of the flange flat . It sits sooo flush its sexy .
Normal people use a grinder .
Im not normal , most already know this .

Reaming 12mm holes for the brass inserts .

Oh wow. I want a milling machine!!!!
IMax what features do you reckon a complete novice like me will need for doing the fins - esp Powerbox with the 6degree taper. ? Would one of these do the job?

As it happens ScMo has just put $750 in my bank account, would look good in my new micro factory. But I guess Galbraith Loop is too far for you to come just to play with a few fins?
And don't forget we have a mate that can make milling machines sing. Whenever we need lessons.
Would be very handy for shaping stainless steel leading edges, (I'm just thinking of excuses to by one)

Here's the thing , and there are things .
Downer alert !!!
That machine could work for what I did on mine . It is lightweight and cheap. Minimally I'd go , um , more sterdy .
There is more , you will need a collet set and holder to hold the milling cutters , milling cutters , clamp set ,machine vice if you want to do anything else , and the obvious other bits .
You could buy a minimum OK quality machine for 2 to 3 grand with collet set and vice . Still need cutters .
Having said that , like mine it can only machine things square .
The Tuttle lug on the casting is quite good and square . It's only just oversize to a Tuttle . So a quickish , ( 15 min ) , file and I'm snug in a 16 mm Tuttle box hole . All good ! I used this to hold the fin to machine the base .
It gets way techo trying to hold the fin to mill the PB angle . Kinda can't be done because that good square clamping surface is what you want to change .
Two options , cast extra square lugs on to the base to clamp on to , or cast a PB base .
Is that an easy option ?
The good thing about your fins is , the flange surface does most of the work , not the fit in the box .
ps : the fin finish is great , just a little flapper wheel work is needed for a fresh cast version .

ScoMo did not put $750 in your bank remember you just got back some tax you already paid!

No mate, haven't paid tax for almost 20 years, that's one advantage of being retired.

Top filler coat . Might need another .

Was going to do some fin work , but as soon as i fired up the angle grinder the missus ran into the garage and yelled at me , " its bloody 8:30 Easter Sunday morning , what the hell are you doing ? The neighbors must hate us . For a smart man sometimes you can be pretty dumb " .

Filled , sanded ready to paint . Only needed the one filler coat .
I expected the board to be white because of the Q Cell in the resin . But when sanded back only the thicker areas were a bit white , the rest was quite transparent because the resin is clear . So i decided to go for the what you see is what you get approach and used a green tint in the finish coats instead of a solid color . There you go olskool . Wish i used a light pencil instead of a texta on the foam . It will get another coat so should be a little greener but still see through . The rails will be blue and deck pads will cover the heel patches . Not only will it be big , but big an ugly .

Smooth

Taped up ready for one of two finish coats .

Kinda green , the type of green only a mother could love .
Dont panic the blue rails have got to make it ,...,um,...., probably uglier !
Should be a good shark deterrent .

Just a light coat of clear , and some grip to do.

looking good, and a very fast build mate,
Question - so is the blue tint on the edge mixed with the epoxy resin and then applied with a brush
