Downwind running on a SUP is different to anything else in the sport. You're not just paddling harder. You're reading a moving field of energy and inserting yourself into it at the right moment.
Get the timing wrong by half a second and the bump passes under you. Get it right and the board accelerates, the paddle lightens, and you're surfing without a wave.
This is a skill built on pattern recognition as much as fitness. The paddlers who get it quickly stop chasing bumps and start anticipating them.
Before you go out: conditions that teach vs conditions that punish
The learning window is 15-20 knots (28-37 km/h). At this range, the bumps are moving at roughly 10-14 knots (18-26 km/h) - fast enough to feel the energy, slow enough that your board speed can match and briefly exceed them.
According to the Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI), which certifies downwind SUP instructors in Australia, their Level 3 assessment requires candidates to complete 10 km runs in 20-knot winds with swell of 2-4 ft (0.6-1.2 m) - that's the benchmark for competent downwinding, not for learning it.
Start below it.
Above 25 knots (46 km/h), the game changes. Bumps become steeper, faster, and more confused. A poorly timed catch at that speed throws you forward off the nose, or pearls you into the back of the bump ahead.
If you've never caught a downwind bump before, 25 knots is not the place to start. You'll spend the session falling rather than learning.
Fetch is the factor most paddlers overlook. You need a long unobstructed upwind run for bumps to form and organise themselves.
A bay with 10 km of upwind fetch in a 15-knot sea breeze will produce better learner bumps than open ocean in 20 knots where the chop is disorganised.
Harbours and large bays with a consistent afternoon sea breeze - common along Australia's east and south-west coasts - are ideal. The bumps are more evenly spaced and slower-moving than open-ocean runs.
Wind-against-tide conditions are not for learning. When a 15-20-knot wind opposes a tidal run, it steepens the chop sharply and shortens the interval between bumps. The window to sprint and catch is compressed. Save those conditions for when catching bumps is already second nature.
Board selection: why hull shape changes everything in downwind conditions
For most intermediate paddlers learning downwind, a planing hull is the right choice. A planing hull - flat, wide nose, more rocker - rides on top of the water. When a bump lifts the tail, the board planes forward naturally.
The wide nose doesn't want to bury. The rocker gives you a margin for error on the weight shift. You're working with the hull's instinct.
A displacement hull works differently, and not always in your favour in chop. Displacement boards have a pointed, V-shaped entry that cuts through water efficiently. In flat water racing, this is a speed advantage.
In wind chop downwinding, that same pointed nose wants to pierce into the back of the bump in front of you, not plane over it. If your weight is even slightly too far forward when the board accelerates, the nose buries.
Displacement boards reward experienced downwinders who can manage weight transfer precisely - they're not forgiving for learning the skill.
Board length and the learning curve. Longer boards (14 ft / 4.3 m and above) glide between bumps better than shorter boards. They carry momentum from one catch to the next, which covers timing errors.
A 12'6" (3.8 m) all-rounder will catch bumps, but you'll need to paddle harder between them to maintain the speed to link. If you're learning on a shorter board, that's fine. Just expect a higher sprint frequency.
Volume matters more than length when conditions build. A board with adequate volume for your weight - roughly 100-120 litres for an 80 kg paddler in moderate chop - will sit higher and plane more willingly than an under-volumed board you're sinking into.
If the board feels sluggish before the bump even arrives, it's not giving you anything to work with.

Reading the chop: what you're actually looking for
Not all lumps are bumps. In wind chop, the water surface is a mix of primary wind waves, reflected waves off headlands or boat wakes, and small cross-chop from gusts at slight angles.
Only the primary wind waves - the ones running cleanly in the wind direction - are rideable. The rest are interference. Learning to screen them out visually is the first skill.
Look for the dark patches. A gust shows up on the water before it reaches you as a darker, ruffled patch - "busy water" as experienced downwinders describe it.
When a gust comes through, the bumps behind it will be slightly steeper and faster for the next 10-15 seconds. That's the productive moment. Watch the water 40-60 metres upwind of your position, not right next to the board.
Rideable bumps have a specific look. You're looking for bumps that are slightly steeper on their back face than the ones around them - a small but visible wall of water that the wind is building energy into.
They'll catch the light differently, appearing as a slightly darker or more distinct line in the chop. Flat, low, widely-spaced lumps are glide opportunities. Steep, closely-stacked bumps in a confused sea are harder to time.
Bump trains. The most productive thing you'll find in a downwind run is a bump train - a sequence of three to five bumps running in the same direction with roughly equal spacing.
Once you catch the back bump in a train, the next bump is already visible in front of you. You ride the first glide, return to paddling speed, and the second bump is waiting.
Elite downwinders like Matt Nottage - 2015 King of the Cut champion in Western Australia, won by more than two minutes on a 24 km course - don't hunt individual bumps; they find trains and ride them as long as they hold together.
Scan at three distances. Near (5-10 m behind): know what's about to hit you. Mid (20-40 m behind): decide which bump to target. Far (40-80 m behind and to the sides): identify the next train after the one you're on.
Move your gaze through all three zones constantly. Locking onto one distance is how paddlers miss the set that was obvious to everyone watching from the shore.
Stroke timing: the sprint window and how to hit it
The mistake most paddlers make first is sprinting too late. They wait until the bump is at their feet before paddling harder. By that point the bump's energy has already passed under the board.
You need to be at or near bump speed before the bump reaches you - which means starting your sprint 3-4 strokes before the back of the bump reaches the tail of your board.
The sprint is 4-6 short, high-cadence strokes. Not your cruising stroke - these are shorter in reach, higher in cadence, and pulling through the power phase faster.
Kelly Margetts, Gold Coast-based professional SUP racer and coach, emphasises full-body connection in the stroke: the bottom arm extended through the catch to activate back muscles, not just arms pulling.
In the downwind sprint, that full-body engagement is what generates the acceleration rate you need to match bump speed.
The suction sensation. When you're correctly positioned just behind a bump and it's moving at roughly your board speed, there's a brief pulling sensation - the bump drawing your board forward into its trough. That's your trigger.
Two or three short explosive strokes at this moment are worth more than eight strokes started a second later. Experienced downwinders call it "feeling the bump suck you in." That's the moment to commit.
Once the board starts to accelerate, ease the paddle pressure. The bump is now doing work. Continuing to sprint at full power actually destabilises your balance. You're pushing hard against a board that's already moving faster than your paddle.
Take one or two lighter strokes to maintain trim, not to power forward. Let the bump carry you.
Side the paddle on the wave side. When a bump runs slightly off the wind axis - common in chop - paddle on the downwind side of the board during the catch.
This gives you a natural lean toward the bump face and helps keep the board angled into the run rather than washing sideways off it.
Body position and weight transfer during the ride
Stance width is your shock absorber. Feet shoulder-width apart, toes angled roughly 15 degrees out from parallel - this is Margetts' baseline position and it applies directly in downwind conditions. Knees slightly bent, not locked.
The moment your knees straighten, the chop transmits directly to your hips and your balance becomes reactive rather than proactive.
The weight shift happens in two phases. During the catch, your weight should be slightly back - no more than 10-15% behind centre - so the nose stays clear of the water ahead.
A buried nose during the catch is the most common cause of a failed attempt.
Once the board starts surfing down the front face of the bump, shift weight incrementally forward to keep the nose tracking in the direction of travel rather than letting the bump push the tail sideways.
Forward weight keeps you connected. If you're too far back during the ride, the board sits in the trough like a rudder, being pushed rather than surfing.
Sliding your front foot five centimetres forward can be the difference between a board that planes and a board that wallows. You'll feel it immediately: the nose drops slightly, the board speeds up, the chop under the hull feels less turbulent.
Don't reach forward to compensate. If you're leaning the paddle forward dramatically trying to generate power from too far back, your body position is the problem, not your stroke. Fix the feet first.
Hip and shoulder rotation in the chop. In flat water, hip rotation adds power to the stroke. In downwind chop, it serves a second purpose: it acts as a minor balance correction.
As the board pitches forward over a bump, a natural rotation of the hips keeps your centre of gravity stable over the board rather than lagging behind. Think of it as staying centred over a moving platform, not driving power into a static one.
Linking bumps: the skill that separates downwinders
Catching one bump is a start. Linking three in a row is downwinding. After the ride, as the bump pulls away from under you, the board decelerates.
Your job is to maintain above-cruise speed for the 10-20 metres between bumps so you can sprint onto the next one without starting from zero.
The bridging stroke. As the glide dies, resume full-cadence paddling immediately. Don't pause to look around. Two to three full-power strokes into the gap between bumps, then drop to a medium-cadence maintenance stroke while you locate the next target.
The common mistake is falling back to resting pace between bumps, which means rebuilding speed from scratch for every sprint.
Angle adjustments between bumps. The next bump in a train is rarely in a straight line from where the last one deposited you. Use the glide-out phase to read its angle and adjust your board direction with a slight turning stroke before the next sprint.
Correcting course after you've started sprinting is messy - you lose stroke efficiency and the bump may pass while you're sorting out your angle.
The non-obvious link. When bump spacing is tight - under 10 metres - it's sometimes faster to paddle harder than the bump you're on rather than just matching its speed.
At that point you're skating across the top of the bump field, using each crest as a brief push rather than riding the face down. In lighter conditions where bumps are slower than your paddling speed, this is often the faster strategy.
Most paddlers don't discover this because they assume "riding" the bump is always better than "passing through" it - it isn't, and the right choice depends on conditions on the day.
What goes wrong and how to diagnose it
The bump passes under you every time. You're starting your sprint too late, or your base paddling speed before the sprint is too low. Try paddling 10-15% harder between bumps so your minimum speed is already closer to bump speed.
When you sprint, you'll close the gap faster. Also check that you're reading the bump correctly at mid-distance - if you're only reacting when it's close, you'll always be late.
You catch the bump but immediately fall off the back. Your weight is too far forward during the catch phase, and the bump is pitching the nose down faster than your balance allows. Move your back foot five to ten centimetres rearward before you sprint.
The nose needs to ride up the back of the bump, not dig into it.
You catch it but slide sideways off the face. The board isn't aligned closely enough with the bump direction before you commit.
Check your angle in the mid-distance scan phase - by the time you're sprinting, the board should already be pointing within 10 degrees of the bump's travel direction. Correcting angle during the sprint dissipates the power you need for acceleration.
Short glides - two seconds and it's over. You're catching the bump but not riding the front face efficiently. Your weight is too far back during the ride, keeping the nose high and causing drag.
As the board accelerates, make a deliberate, small forward weight shift and notice whether the glide extends. If it does, the front-foot shift is your fix.
Consistent falls on the same type of bump. If you're falling at a specific point - always on steep bumps, always when accelerating fast, always when adjusting angle - that's a pattern, not bad luck. Steep bumps require earlier weight transfer back than slow bumps.
Fast acceleration requires softer knee bend to absorb the pitch. These are fixable patterns once you recognise them as patterns rather than random wipeouts.
Safety in downwind conditions
PFD and leash are not optional in ocean downwind runs. Australian states are progressively requiring lifejackets to meet Australian Standard AS 4758 - South Australia from January 2025, Queensland from September 2025, with other states following on their own timelines.
For SUP paddling, a Level 50 PFD designed for active watersports is the appropriate choice - it provides head and neck support without restricting paddle movement.
A leg rope (leash) keeps your board with you if you fall in chop with wind that will carry the board away faster than you can swim.
Tell someone your plan before every run. Downwind runs are one-way - your transport logistics need to be sorted before you launch. Make sure someone onshore knows your start point, finish point, expected duration, and what to do if you don't check in.
In stronger conditions, a land-based contact with a vehicle following your route is the safest setup. This isn't overcaution; in 20 knots of offshore breeze, falling and losing your board is a rescue situation without a contact plan.
Don't launch in conditions above your current skill level. The ASI's own benchmark for a paddler who can safely run 10 km in downwind conditions is 20 knots with 2-4 ft (0.6-1.2 m) swell - and that's after 40 hours of downwind experience.
If you're in your first sessions, 12-15 knots on a sheltered bay is where you build the pattern recognition that will keep you safe when conditions are stronger.
Your next session: one thing to focus on
Ignore bump linking for now. Spend an entire session focused only on reading bumps at mid-distance (20-40 m upwind) and starting your sprint at the correct moment. Every other skill - weight shift, board angle, linking - depends on timing.
If your sprint starts late, nothing else can compensate. Get the timing right on ten consecutive bumps before you try to link them, and the rest follows naturally.

Frequently asked questions
Can I learn downwind on an inflatable SUP? You can catch bumps on an inflatable, but most inflatables are designed as planing hulls with higher volume and wider profiles that limit glide efficiency.
The flex in the board under load also dampens the feedback you're trying to learn from - you won't feel weight-shift cues as clearly. A rigid planing hull in the 14 ft range will accelerate your learning faster.
If an inflatable is all you have, use it, but expect a slower progression than on a rigid board.
What if the bumps are running at an angle to the wind? This is normal on most Australian runs - pure downwind chop is rare.
Bumps running 10-20 degrees off the wind are rideable; the technique is the same, but your angle adjustments between bumps become more important. Bumps running more than 30 degrees off the wind require proper downwind swell reading skills, which is a step beyond chop running.
Start on runs where the bump direction is as close to the wind direction as possible.
How do I know when conditions are too advanced for me? If you're consistently falling during the catch rather than during the ride, the bumps are moving faster than your board speed can match - conditions are too strong for your current fitness or board volume.
If you're falling during the ride, it's a technique issue you can fix in the same conditions. The dividing line is whether you can match bump speed at all; if you can't, reduce conditions or increase board volume first.
Should I use a longer or shorter paddle in downwind runs? A paddle set at standard flat-water height (roughly 15-20 cm / 6-8 in above your head when standing) works for downwind.
Some experienced downwinders drop paddle length by 3-5 cm to facilitate the shorter, higher-cadence sprint stroke - a longer paddle slows cadence. Try your current paddle first; adjustment is a refinement, not a prerequisite.
